Meet Pete Cabrinha & Commissioner Kiter Ken Russell

Pete Cabrinha stopped by Adventure Sports Miami to say hello to local kiters last Friday night. http://www.vimeo.com/296473807 Long term kiter, Ken Russell and Miami City Commissioner filled us in on kiting access and water quality issues. It is very rare to have a kiter in politics, it is far more ...

Re: Anton's tips on surviving a squall.

Don't kite in or near squalls, dozens of dead kiters and likely a few thousand seriously injured riders worldwide over almost 20 years support that conclusion. If you are about to be nailed by a sneaky "white squall," hit your QR, punch out, emergency depower your kite, BEFORE the wind speed increas...

Re: Anton's tips on surviving a squall.

White squall is a term I haven't seen very often and after all these years.(1) Basically it seems to be high wind from something other than an obvious thunderstorm or cumulonimbus cloud. It seems it may be another name for a microburst. Microbursts can boost winds to 150 mph+ (130 kts.+). The vague ...

Re: Fatality in Spain

Rest in peace and strength to his pregnant wife, family and friends. My condolences go out to all impacted by this accident It seems a well experienced kiter had a bad water impact from an 8 m jump or lofting, it is unclear which, during a strong wind gust, and lost consciousness face down in the wa...

Re: Casualty in Sicily

1. Does "fire the safety" mean using the quick release to get the kite to flag out or is it the complete separation of the kite? I believe it is analogous to flagging the kite out although not all kites take that approach any more. I started calling it "emergency depowering" the kite some years bac...

Re: Casualty in Sicily

It is important to note that squalls can be moving at 60 mph or a mile a minute. If you see one three miles away it can be on you in three minutes or the gust front might hit before it arrives. The best solution is to avoid them entirely by looking at weather radar, sat. imagery, hazard warnings and...

Re: Casualty in Sicily

Thank you for all your input on this and other situations pmaggie over the years, it is much appreciated. You make a number of good points. I think it is important for the kiting community to take a hard look at dangerous weather for what it is. The fact that there was an absurd quantity of kiters o...

It exploded with 60 to 70 mph gusts and sent riders and kites flying all over the place. Remarkably some people continue to ig...

Re: Casualty in Sicily

I think it’s fair to say you can’t make that cloud look significantly worse than it actually is. It only kicked out of 40 knot gust when it might been double that or more. Lightning is often a risk with thunderstorms but here’s a good question. How many kiters have been struck by lightning versus ho...
