Re: Kiting Santa Ana Winds

Purdyd,

Thank you for your detailed response. Sounds like a recipe for disaster! I won’t be kiting Port Hueneme in Santa Ana winds.

Still holding out hope for Silver Strand in San Diego, but not much...

Re: Kiting Santa Ana Winds

I would say, unless you have a boat, I would not kite Port Hueneme in a Santa Anna. It has nothing to do with skills. Okay, please explain. Does the wind gust in excess of 50 mph? Or is the wind super nasty alternating from 10 to 30? I don’t want to be a Coast Guard rescue, on the other hand, a lot...

Kiting Santa Ana Winds

I will be in LA on Monday. The forecast is for Santa Ana winds. I have read that the two places to ride are Silver Strand in San Diego or Port Hueneme south of Ventura. I have kited in gusty off-shore winds many times as I live near inland lakes, so I will take the appropriate precautions. Just curi...

Re: under a 9m better a 6 or a 7m for twintip riding?

The quiver sizes for nice coverage on a twintip if you weigh 70 to 90 kg. Sure, others make it work with different sizes, but for most riders this works. If you live in an area where the wind is rarely strong, you can forget the smallest kite size. 5, 7, 9, 12, 16 and a nice big foil if you are Pump...

Re: First take on the new Ozone Explore?

I have been flying the FS Peak kites for years. In light or intermittent wind, the Peak easily out performs the Access. I have been flying my Peak 9 when other kiters with Access kites can’t get their kites in the air. It is true that the Peak. Is not a great jumper, but the Access is not great for ...

The best part of this vid is that he has an entire fan full of multiple kites, boards, bars, and No PUMP! 😂

Re: Foilers vs Kiters proportion now

Foilfun, you and your lady friend are taking away all of our excuses not to foil. First of all, learning to foil is not easy, but tandem foil!!! :o And tandem foil jumping :thumb: I have a foil, will practice! On another note, there is a big contingent of foilers on Maui. Some are out on the water a...

Re: 20 Years of Kiting!

I had more than one bruised purple wrist due to the wrist leash. Snap Shackles were even more dangerous, the only fatality that occurred at my local launch was when one of our local riders could not release his shackle when a microburst passed by. Rick, I don’t remember if I bought the 16.9 Wipika A...

Re: 20 Years of Kiting!

Congratulations to Rick, Paul, Peter, and others that have lived to tell the stories of early days kiting. The early gear was dangerous and the learning curve was high. 2 line kites have been mentioned, but don’t forget fixed chicken loops, wrist leashes (there is nothing better than getting dragged...

Re: The Perfect Kite Event - how would it look like?

The perfect event is an empty beach, no other riders, no other people, smooth wind at 15 to 20 knots. Just me and the seagulls.

Oh, yeah, that is my typical kite session. :thumb:
