Re: old fart round the world tour

My experience of Mauritius was not too expensive and you can rent a car and see the whole island. But I was there is 2004 and had my first lesson there. I imagine kiting in the bay at One Eye would be good, but the surf kiting there is experts only. Madagascar I visited earlier, and it was frightful...

Re: How hard?

No concerns about stitching, and this is a 2015 v1 Pivot that I ride a lot. The only kite I ever had blow up on me was my first kite, a well used and abused North Rhino 12m. Pumped it up at Langebaan back in 2005, put it down on the sand, turned around, and a Big Bang left the leading edge fully ope...

Re: Launching solo

You might find yourself in over 20 knots just by bad luck or bad forecast. Knowing how to self land by simply releasing to the leash is critical, so having practiced that you are in good shape. When around 30 knots, might be best to do it in water, as that dampens the chance of some kind of re-fligh...

Re: How hard?

I checked the gauge on my yellow Naish pump, one of the newer taller variety, yesterday when pumping my 9m Naish Pivot, and the top of the red zone is indicated as 12 PSI, and that's where I pump it to, and it is as hard as I can get it. Passes both the ping and wingtip fold tests with flying colors.

Don’t be in a rush to self launch. You need more time kiting. Always go with someone until you have LOTS more experience.

Re: old fart round the world tour

We sort of did this as a family in 2005, sadly before I was an surf-competent kiter. As part of a sabbatical in Cape Town, bought RTW tickets for four (at $21k, largest purchase of my life after my house, and that was a mortgage). Must be a lot more expensive now. Same rules though, so we had time i...

Re: What's the dumbest thing you have seen a newbie do?

Nope, just did some stupid things. One was my only attempt at an anchored launch, kite took off prematurely, powered up, and slammed down, snapping all four lines at various knots in the bridle and tails. Another was similar, while transferring a kite to another rider, had a massive pull on me. Fina...

Re: What's the dumbest thing you have seen a newbie do?

I really don't want to list all the dumb things I've done kiting, because learning with next to no instruction was pretty crazy. One I was really embarrassed about was completely releasing my kite while trying to uninvert it, luckily on a mild day, a couple hundred yards off the shore from the light...

Re: How hard?

I'm lucky to be a feeble 62-year-old, so I pump my kites as hard as I am able! Turns out that is the top of the red region or around 12 PSI ( I think, the pump is in my garage) for 7 and 9m, and top of green range, maybe 9 PSI, for my 12 and 16m, which are also older kites. I would be afraid of pop...
