Re: How To Self-Land a Kite in High Winds

Anchors don't work for me because I typically do downwinders alone, and the wind will often be blowing a lot harder at the end of the run. One instance of a failed self-landing in high winds was enough to convince me simply to dump the kite to a single front line flag out. Only thing then is to make...

Re: South Africa - spot recommendations?

All good advice above. Pay attention to windguru, wind alert, and windyty. And use the Spots information on Kiteforum. The weather systems generally move west to east, so when the SEaster dies out at Cape Town, it generally gives another day of good wind at Struisbaai, Witsand, and Stillbaai. And th...

Re: Marteen Haeger won the XR5 challenge: off to Cape Town

Just what we need, more Core kite guys ripping big jumps at Kite Beach!

Just kidding! One of them even gave me a thumbs up on one of my geriatric jumps the other day.

Hope to see you out here, Maarten and Erik, just don't bother coming out for Christmas, no wind till afterwards.

Re: Was it Nick or Kevin?

It was seriously windy today. The SEaster blew all night and then around 8-9AM really cranked in. I waited a while and went out on my 7m Pivot around 12:30. By around 2PM it was too much, and I came in and rented a 5.5m Best Kahoona from the nearby Best Kiteboarding Africa shop. I rode that for abou...

Re: Was it Nick or Kevin?

It is absolutely cranking in Cape Town this morning. I'm not sure I can handle it on my 7m Pivot, but no doubt all of the pros, including Nick and Kevin, and some locals will be out putting on a show. I just watched two guys launch at the lighthouse in Milnerton on tiny kites. The gusts must be arou...

Re: Was it Nick or Kevin?

Good point, I had missed the parachute in one of the early scenes. Nuts all the same. And why not go for 300m while you are at it? Perhaps the line was not long enough. He was up there for a long time, I eventually got scared about being that far out in the bay on my own and turned back before he le...

Re: Was it Nick or Kevin?

And here's the video! Not only no emergency parachute that I can see, but he did not even secure his chicken loop!

Re: Was it Nick or Kevin?

Cool, thanks for finding it. Something tells me Nick did not have a little emergency parachute on his chest like Jesse appears to have had. The video should be fun.

No wind today, and little tomorrow, but Saturday will crank here.
