A Go Joe is a very safe way of keeping an eye on your board. Only real safe solution out there really. Mind you, you usually will find your board.

If they are all the same kite, of the same year, I'd go for 11. If not...I'd still go for 11. The larger the kites, the larger the gap in between can be.

@coupdevil: Don't think too much. Get any board, 5' 2" to 5' 3" for a noseless, 5' 8" to 5' 10", get on it, ride away. It's not as hard as you think. If you want to rent kites, don't bother buying a bar. Personally, I would rather rent a board and bring my kites. Kite rentals are becoming more widespread, if that's the word, but are still hard to find. Plus, with some experience you'll find it annoying to have to adjust to a different kite every ...

I am teaching my son on a 2.5 Uno, on 23 meter lines. It's fine! I don't see why you'd want to shorten your lines.
