Re: Delta Hydrofoil - First ride

Sounds great!

What were you going to buy, and how did it compare to the Delta?

Re: 7 kn of wind, who will win AC45F (America's cup boat) or kite foil?

I'm beginning to think we should just be comparing two numbers: upwind VMG and downwind VMG.

Ideally they would be taken with similar wind speeds (7knts if we go off the title of this thread).

I'm beginning to think breaking down the race videos might be the only way we get our two numbers.

Re: 7 kn of wind, who will win AC45F (America's cup boat) or kite foil?

Ok, so both craft are highly capable from 7-25kts wind. AC50 by changing foils, kitefoils by changing kit sizes. I found the polars for the AC45s from a few years back and they were unimpressive. Everyone has opinions, but I don't see this getting settled without either: A: a match race (which would...

Re: 7 kn of wind, who will win AC45F (America's cup boat) or kite foil?

Found a polar for the 2013 America's Cup: https://goo.gl/images/sC9xK6 From: http://www.cupinfo.com/cupstats/index-ac34-statistics-polar-plots-02.php I'm sure the AC boats have gotten faster with four years of development, but VMGs of 20kts upwind and 37kts downwind (absolute best case, rounding up,...

Re: 7 kn of wind, who will win AC45F (America's cup boat) or kite foil?

Certainly if the course is a bunch of slalom buoys twenty feet apart the kite wins. I guess I hadn't seen video of the AC boats in swell. Not sure who would have a tougher time with it. A foil kite has a lot of the same advantages as the AC wing sail. A traditional sailboat mainsail is actually very...

Re: 7 kn of wind, who will win AC45F (America's cup boat) or kite foil?

Seems like a kitefoiler would win in winds too light for the AC to foil, so 6kts? And seems like the kitefoiler wins by default when the wind is too strong for the AC to be safe with its wingsail. It does seem that the wind range sweet spot of the ACs has expanded now that they have multiple foils t...

Re: Just say No to the nose

I would resist cutting the nose off a carbon fuselage. It could be there to help resist splitting forces from the front main wing bolt. It's easier to visually estimate stresses in an aluminum (isotopic material) fuselage. Don't "cut off your nose to spite your face". If it really bothers you then s...

Re: Another first board question

I'm surprised I haven't heard of the RRD until now. Looks promising. Only knock on it could be carbon+aluminum galvanic corrosion concerns. But lots of people don't trust any aluminum setup to last more than a few seasons. That said, I'm learning on the hoverglide/flight school package and have no r...

Re: New 14.5 Ocean Rodeo Flite

I'm in San Diego and always going in marginal conditions. When I was TTing I was usually the last one on the water at our beginner beach as the wind fell. I'm learning to foil this season.

If I could rebuild my quiver from scratch it would be with a 14.5m flite and 32m racing lines.
