Re: Dumb question

The air in the kite is under pressure. When it's let out of the kite, it naturally expands to the same density as the surrounding air. As it expands, the molecules become more active (they move around more to fill the space). In order to do so, they have to absorb energy from the environment, which ...

Re: Relaunching for beginners

thanks for the correction. I'd prided myself in being a spelling nerd, but... wrong again. Berg meaning mountain, and burg meaning castle or town :) Now i know.

Re: Relaunching for beginners

Oh I get it. I thought you meant that the kite looks like a falling monkey as it drops helplessly down from 12 o'clock :) Good way of describing it. I have seen this in every single student I have taught or observed over the last 20 years. I usually explain about that instinct and tell them, "Don't ...

Re: Relaunching for beginners

Herman- thanks. "Inner falling monkey" lol I've never heard it called that before. Will use it! :) In the old days we used to call it the "Hindenberg." Used mostly as a verb.

Re: 20m LEI Kites - Its Time

I used to have a North Rhino 22.5m kite. Or was it a 21.5? I don't remember because it was in about 2002 or 2003. All I remember about it was that the leading edge was about a foot and a half in diameter and it took forever to pump up with the small pumps we had then. And the only way I could go upw...

Re: Relaunching for beginners

Thanks Jyoder, good points there. Relaunching in light wind can be soo frustrating! For total beginners without that level of kite finesse/understanding, if it's too light I just suggest we call it a day. Then we watch the students from the other schools with their kites on the water, ticking away e...

Relaunching for beginners

I made this video for people who are learning to kite. Sometimes it can be frustrating, when you're learning. Also as a teacher, to watch people spend all sorts of time on the water yanking on lines without knowing how or why, and in effect preventing the kite from relaunching. Hope it's helpful. ht...

Re: I hate surf booties! update

so yes i got the Atan as you guys recommended, thanks they do feel much better than an actual surf booty. "My fancy socks" I call them. On that note, I stepped on a spiky shell when I was teaching the other day, wearing Mystic surf booties. The thing poked right through the sole and into my foot. No...

Re: I hate surf booties!

Agree Atan are by far the best, nothing even comes close. And if you have a hard or thick sole, all barefoot feel is lost, you can't have both, so yes durability isn't the same. Get a pair of cheap oversize Clogs and walk in these on land and the beach, just leave them there when out. Also in winte...

Does that need stitches?
Um. Probably should have gotten one or two. It's finally starting to heal up. :)
