Re: Best way to make a prototype

Light and Frost is not sure how you are making these components however size usually equates to time necessary to complete and to cost. You are faced with two major questions which can really only be answered by time on the components. 1. Are the materials chosen and construction techniques structur...

Re: What wood for mast core?

Light and Frost has made 10 masts to date from 50cm to 90cm and from straight to curved. We use 3cm plywood and then glass over the plywood shape. The center of the mast provides very little strength. You also do not need to use carbon fiber. We do not like mono structures like carbon fiber(CF) due ...

One Stop fill coat for wings and masts

Light and frost has been using the following process to obtain a one-stop fill coat on wing and mast surfaces which requires very little sanding. This process works on flat, dihedral and anhedral wing shapes and on both sanded plywood and fiberglass. For reference all our wings are made of 2 and 3 c...

Re: Change AoA of front wing

Suggest you first refer to the following. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVdSx5eNdUA Light and Frost has installed 10 different wing fuselage sets to 5 different masts both curved and straight and approx 8 different board types from old twintips to surfboards up to seven foot. In every case the sys...

Re: T-Tails on 50 and 70 cm masts

When approaching this work keep in mind that our main interest here is to ride out thru a breaking wave line on 50 to 70 cm masts, turn around and ride back in. We have no interest in racing or riding flat water or using longer masts. We noticed that when hit with wave or swell when beating out, the...

T-Tails on 50 and 70 cm masts

Light and Frost, a non profit kite board research group, has been attempting to increase the stall resistance of a hydrofoil when operating 50 and 70 cm masts in heavy chop and wave during onshore wave riding. When beating out thru multiple wave lines we began experimenting with small vertical tails...

Re: Question about sanding Hydrofoil for less whistling

In some cases especially metal hollow masts the problem can be solved by filling the hollow mast with a mixture of epoxy and microballons.

Water Sheer and Hydrofoils

Wind sheer in aviation is an abrupt change in wind speed and/or direction. The two most common types are temperature inversions wherein the abrupt change occurs at the temperature inversion level. Micro bursts from thunderstorm activity can also cause wind sheer. Both these types of sheer occur in w...

Filling small pin holes and voids when painting wings/mast etc.

If you decide to paint your components you may find small pin holes or void appear after your first primer coat. These small pin holes could be filled with superglue and sodium bicarbonate BUT this leaves a surface with a different absorption rate then primer paint which will show up on the final pa...

C60 and Longevity

Carbon Fiber might be good for mast, wings and boards BUT it also looks like one form of carbon is good for human longevity. If you want to kite surf when you are 150 years old suggest you follow the developments of C60 (ie carbon 60). Just search "C60 in olive oil" and read the latest science. pape...
