LA area kiting?

Going to downtown LA this saturday for a week for a work trip.

Is it worth bringing gear? kite/tt/kitefoil?

There is very little talk about SoCal on here and I can imagine there's minimal wind and lots of beachgoers/surfers....

Re: Foilmount

just drill holes and bolt the foil on your board, I've done it to 4 different boards, works great. Washers on top, long bolts, nuts on bottom. Stainless steel.

Finally gave it a shot. Not as easy as it looks. I think it will work but I think it is prudent to start saving for a production board. Hopefully they will be available when I am ready.
How is this working?

Re: Foiling on Kauai?

Yeah, I was also on Oahu where the wind and conditions at Kailua were awesome.

It was just odd because conditions on the east side were excellent and I saw ZERO kites or windsurfers at all...

Re: What is the average and maximum gust swing you kite in?

I personally have a formula that seems to work: If the range is greater than 1/2 the average then it is too gusty and not very fun. For example: Lull 9, Gusting to 20, Average windspeed of 14. The range is therefore 11 knots (20-9=11), which is more than half the average (14), thus it is probably no...

Re: Foiling on Kauai?

To report back. I just spent a week on kauai but didn't end up bringing my kite gear. It blew 20-25knots east EVERY day, which apparently is very rare. We toured the whole island and drove around several days and not once did I see a single kite in the air! Literally not a single kite despite perfec...

Re: 5/3 steamer recommendations

Get a Ripcurl Flashbomb and the flashbomb boots and 5/3 3-finger mittens.

You will be super stoked and warm and uninhibited although you will be about $600 poorer.

Re: April Kiteboarding Lessons FL Keys or Carib?

Hatteras is great in April, not guaranteed warm though and definitely not tropical beautiful, you could get hit with a cold spell requiring a3/2 wetsuit

Great spot to learn though and basically guaranteed wind in April and awesome kiting vibe/community

Re: April Kiteboarding Lessons FL Keys or Carib?

Go to Florida Keys and kite with the Otherside. Pros: -Great no wind activities including a cable park! -Warm -Shallow/flat -Great instructors -Cheap to get there and much cheaper food/booze than caribbean -Can daytrip drive to Miami or key west for exploration or crazy nightlife Cons: -Turks has be...

Re: Recommendations for a cheap kite?

I had the same kite-life experience as you, kited extensively from 2000-2007 on Fuels, then didn't kite for about 8 years. Definitely get a 2012 or newer kite, you are going to be super stoked, they have gotten so much better! Don't get a c-kite, just get a freeride type kite like: Switchblade, Evo,...
