The problem I saw in your pic is first off you had a straight on shore break that keeps pushing you back to the beach. When we have those conditions here it's important to body drag with your gear as far as you can past the outside break then try to water start just as the next swell is coming in.

As far as lying on the board going upwind or downwind,never really tried it seems like you would have too much drag in the water.Its easier for me to just body drag with my hand on the rail and wait for a extra zephyr of wind to try and water start.

Thanks for the explanations, now the next time I'm foiling and drop speed to the point that the board touches the water I'll either continue with a touchdown gybe or try and power up to get up on the foil. I'm still at the stage of trying to successfully complete a true foiling gybe.
