Re: Light Wind (10-15 knots) Gear

For me, winging was intended to be about light wind, but I have found it's not as effective or efficient as hoped as a light wind vehicle -- compared to kite foiling. [the unexpected positive is the higher wind is way better than expected] It is doable just quite a bit of work. You will find with mo...

Re: conspiracy theory: no way wings should be so expensive

this thread is amusing. Windsurfing was too expensive in the 80s, so we instead we surfed and hiked back country snowboarding and rode cheap mountain bikes. Middle age came with a steady job and eventually more free time which allowed investing in these toys. Wind chasing still remains expensive, wh...

Re: Industry interest in Promoting Wingsurfing

yeah it's scary when a newbie asks for true costing of the entire quiver. Like the frog in the pot of cool water put on to boil, you don't notice it so much when you add a piece at a time. My advice to them is you can do it relatively simple and cheap if you want to. EG a kiter can get by with a 10m...

Re: Industry interest in Promoting Wingsurfing

The more I watch the less interest I have. Access to shitty launches is the only advantage I can see, everything is better and more dynamic with a kite. Also flying a kite is part of the magic, holding a wing in my face is just not appealing to me. :o :o Agreed kiting is more dynamic for jumping an...

Re: Industry interest in Promoting Wingsurfing

hehe, I am going to take a guess that you are under 50? Later on, "cool" matters less, you go with whatever's most fun for the limited time you have left to chase it. :-) Our crew are long-time surfers, who got into kiting to deal with the windy days as the surfing is no good. We have now probably 7...

Re: Industry interest in Promoting Wingsurfing

There is no great conspiracy with evil brands having top secret meetings plotting to change the course of history. Someone came up with a variation that is a mix of surf/sup foiling and windsurfing, turns out lots of people have found it fun, so they are selling more of them. That's pretty much it. ...

Re: Help a winger improve knee starts in rough

What helped me is moving from my 75L to a 90L. I am 75kg ish. That extra 15L is the difference for me for easy confident 99% successful knee starts in all conditions, rough as it gets. The 75L board was fine if powered and if relatively calm, but underpowered or very choppy, and it might be a dozen ...

Re: Charles Brodel Is The Official Qatar Airways GKA Big Air Hydrofoil World Champion

Why were there only 7 competing? Huge props for Charles and Jamie doing all kinds of loop variations on a foil, but they were so far ahead of the rest that I was surprised to not see more big air riders competing. I know there are more riders with a decent level around on the foil! there are. I als...

Re: Winging and Self Rescue

If a relative beginner is out in light onshore breeze of say 10knots and it swings to direct offshore 4 knots - what is the solution? If you try to paddle in and are making 1 knot, you are paddling into 5 knots with a wing of '5m or 6m' thick leading edge trailing behind. It would be the same thing...

Re: Winging and Self Rescue

For moderately athletic people with typical gear, winging is the safest of the wind sports. If the wind dies, paddle in. Which seems super obvious, but maybe not as obvious to newbies? For example, our local surfing break requires 1 or 2 rescues a year where beginners get caught in the current, pani...
