Recon - too little an argument to change brands ?

Postby Foxi » Wed Sep 10, 2003 11:59 am

In most markets Recon-Kites are available now but I miss postings from
stoked riders, having left their old brand for this innovative concept !
Brand loyality seems an important force in this game, doesn´t it ?
What´s your 2 cents, will Cabrinha gain market shares on both, newbies and settled riders ? I assume Recon to penetrate mainly through kiteschools, as once on this system, traditional relaunch should be out of this world.

I admit that I thought the recon was gonna sweep the market, but it isn't...yet. The few unbiased posts I personally have seen about the system hasn't been coming from 'stoked' riders. Some of them seem a bit let down....though it does seem to work great on video. I've seen it, but havent had a chance to try it myself as their is always NO WIND when the opportunity to try it out presents itself. However, I do plan to give it a go when I do finally get a chance. I dunno though if it's great enough to prompt me...or anyone else, to switch brands. We'll see.

remember that safety is a big selling point on these kites. People will only swear by this system when something really bad happens and they depower the kite using the recon system. This luckily doesn't happen much, but if its safety you are after then this kite is probably better for you. So many things can go wrong which usually don't, and i like to know that i can totally depower my kite immediately. eli

All brands have safety system that let you depower your kite completely by now. Recon is in not special in that way, there have even been reports where the system hasn't been working as well as it should, i.e. did not completely depower.

One advantage is being able to relaunch even after activating the safety, which is nice, but has pretty little value to me. Can't think of a single time where I activated MY safety and had any desire to relaunch after. Still nice to have, even more for beginners.

The other advantge is making relaunch easy in all conditions. I rarely have any trouble relaunching as it is though.

For me thats not nearly enough to make Recon a major factor in deciding which kite to buy.

Hi Kiteantigua and Jan,

with regards to safety I would replace the Cabrinha loop by my Wichard shackle anyway as it´s rock solid, prooven reliable AND turnable. I assume Recon to require a rotating hook to avoid screwing up the depower line through rotations !?

Jan, concering safety release: various postings from experienced riders state that once safety is deployed, you can´t reride the system or relaunch in water under normal kiting conditions. I never achieved to do so with my current (optimised Wichard based) safety set up as well, so comparison ends up balanced in this respect !

I have not tried but seen the Recon2 times in action now. In action means kite on the water, safety activated.

Unfortunately both riders had big problems getting the kite up again, maybe becasue the kites were brand new and they did not know the system 100%

Anyway, so far this system does not impress me, I wish it would and I am hoping for someone to show me this one day. Then and only then a brand change might be reality for me.

I would also like to see a comparison between Recon and the French 5 line system. I have seen that one on a video only.

Anyone seen them both next to each other?

O.B.B. - did you see safety deployed or just kite dropped on LE and relauch failure ? as noted above you can´t relaunch once saftey is deployed, this was not intended acc. to Cabrinha.

Hangtimer:
There is no problem using your Whichard with the system. Also, there is NO issue with twisted center lines and the deployment of the safety. I have personally tested with 15 twists in the center lines and with the front and rear lines crosssed (on the same side)..worked as advertised!
