Sonic Bar mods - The SuperSonic Bar

Postby kitesuffer » Sun Jan 15, 2006 5:45 am

Here is a bar I have been testing with the Sonic 11 & 14. A lot of the Ideas came from the STD and OR One bars.Hats off to the U-boat who helped build the first prototype.

Ideally the blue centreline should go and the depower should be longer (pulley attaching to the swivel) but I can't find any amsteel locally and will have to order some. I'd like a better housing for the end of the cleat but I'm not so hot on the fabrication side of things, The big surprise with this bar is how effective the stopper ball is at limiting bar movement.

I'm keen to hear feedback on any improvements or safety issues I've overlooked. The nice thing about this bar is that the conversion cost is minimal and it's easy to go back to the original setup except you have replaced the crappy eyebolt with a bigger, stronger one.

Please forgive my typo in image 3 (here not hear).

Cheers

Mike

Not to much friction with doulbe the rope through the hole?

Would have thought it would make steering heavier.

On my bar I'v made the same system and found with 6mm centreline
thickness and 14mm hole diameter you have no problems.
If you buy a piece of teflon at the marina and drill 2 holes 6mm diam. in
it approx. 13mm centre to centre and apply it like the TD stopper,it perfectly works as such :thumb:,it is however fixed in its position, you can
only slide it manually not by pushing the bar.

Horsey,

Surprisingly little friction. When it's wet there is even less. Steering is fine.

Solo,
How do you rig the cleat below the bar?

Basically it's the same as you got except that I don't have a GK chickenloop.
Planning on getting a '05 Best chickenloop remove the depowerrope mount a piece of stainless steel pipe (9 cm length) on top of the chickenloop and pop the cleat on top of that, you can then attach any length of depower line to the pipe.I use polyester woven rope 6mm
with the outside tightly woven wax it all up with warm water surfwax, and it seems to do the job excellently.
How does the inside of your GK bar centrehole look, metal or plastic cilinder? :bye:

kitesuffer

but, is it really worth doing all that?
I mean, it seems that the original setup works fine.

Have you actually tried this?
I would have thought it would be quite difficult to pull in and cleat the line, because your body is in the way ??

Let us know how well it works in practice.

Cheers

Well done! I was thinking about this and saw some problems and you have already solved them!

I am also thinking of putting it on the waroobar , I saw that the hole through the bar is big enough.

Thanks for your great modification Mike!

looks similar setup to the nova bar now, except one line goes over the bar and not through on the nova.

if you can get a look at a nova bar, I think you can make some thing very similar and with a depower strap or even move the cleat.

that sonic bar keeps me awake at night.
