Progresso,It may be the windiest spot on the gulf

Postby blowhard » Sat Jul 22, 2006 4:08 pm

It's a fun and windy locale when I was there 5 yrs. ago.
Merida is a great city and Progresso is the beach for it .
It is in the gulf which makes a green color but 10. 0 wind and very hot,
in Merida and 82 in Progresso

The Caribbean is not far and much more beautiful water (but for sure not as windy as Progresso ,
Last I heard there is a ferry from St Pete. with a small motorhome for $450.00 U.S. with a casino on board which was cheaper than driving though Tampico and paying Mordita, then :bye:

Hey guys, Progreso is the windiest place in mexico, and where kiters get the most water time. Winter is cold front season so some days will be very windy then the Nortes hit. You can get blown off the water many days with just a 12 so i would take something smaller.
This place is so windy most locals don't have kites bigger than 12, and many have 6-8-10-12 to be perfectly powered. The dominant north west trade winds are super steady.
Here are some pictures from the nationals we held there in March:

Sounds good! Are there any schools or shops in the area? Where do most guys normally go to launch?

I have been there before and I know its quite a big beach...
thanks

Hey there, there is one shop http://www.marinasilcer.com but they are quite informal, and much more focused on windsurfing and sailing. Riding in front of their club is not a very good idea, there is very little beach, and some wood pilings around.
There are another two dealers, one i distribute to, http://www.adventuretours.com.mx , he is a master cave diver as well if you want to go diving in caves. I will PM you his contact information. Most guys ride in front of their beach houses, or get organized to ride at one person's house. As you may know the wind is just as good anywhere along the 150 km coast i have been around, so it's just a matter of driving around and finding an open beach. I will PM you Tony's email, he is an american living in Merida for a couple of years, great guy, great rider too. Yo can ride with those guys, really nice guys. How long are you staying?

thanks for the info. I am driving down to Merida from northern Canada and staying for about two months. I should be there at the beginning of November.

I have driven down twice before and have always noticed how windy Progresso was, but I was never into kiteboarding before. I am really looking forward to it now.

Interesting story about Progreso..I thought Los Barriles/ LaVentenna in Baja is the windiest place in Mexico. Have you been kiting there ? Expensive to live in Progreso ? Safe to live in campground ? Require to wear wetsuit during Nov- Feb ?
