How big a tear before professional repair?

I can understand a temporary repair if you are on vacation or to get a session in, but if you have the time to send it in to a real sail repair outfit it is so worth it- and not expensive. Some sailmakers can replace panels for about what you would pay for the materials to do a "Frankenstein" repair.
