Rick,

Kind of off topic, but on one of your pics you mentioned that his iPhone was faster than your Canon G12. I had one of those for a couple of years and sold it because of the agonizingly slow response and write times. If you are looking for a fast and portable camera, check out the Nikon 1 Series cameras. I upgraded to a Nikon 1 V1 when I dumped the Canon. It is an interchangeable lens camera (like a DSLR) but similar in size to the G12. Has the fastest autofocus of any camera in it's class (faster than most DLSR) and with the shutter set to electronic, you can do burst mode shots of high speed action that maintain full autofocus while shooting 10 frames per second (has a 30 shot buffer, so you can hold the release for 3 seconds and get 30 full frame, in focus shots). Also shoots great HD movies. The V2 just came out, so the prices on the V1 have dropped dramatically if you can still find one in stock.

I was down there at about the same time. Went out w/Skot one day in extremely marginal winds. Back at the dock Skot surprised me by saying that there was no charge for the afternoon's entertainment, as the wind had failed to cooperate. A very stand up gesture, which I appreciated. (I tried to give him $40 for gas, but he would only accept $20. Again, very stand up.) A fun day, which would have been even better w/wind...:)

Thanks for the input on the Nikon cameras Chris. The buffer memory can be slow on the G12. I do like the one handed operation though, including zoom control. For certain types of shooting it can make a big difference. Those are some impressive shooting rates on the Nikon 1 V1 though! The image quality and options look quite good.

B&H has them for $350. which sounds like a major price reduction. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/control ... &A=details

Great story Pluvious2002, thanks for passing it along! I hope you have nothing but great wind for your next trip to Cayo Huesto.

Wish I had paid that for mine, but I still don't regret the purchase. Yeah, these are all manual zoom except for the 10-100mm power zoom lens (which has the zoom control on the side of the lens). So if that is important to you, it would be a deal killer. Still, for most fast action shots, it's hard to beat the size of this package and the capabilities.

Anyone heading down to Key West anytime soon? Looks like the latest cold snap has a bunch of people looking south. I posted an image to the KW Facebook page and it has been shared over 600 times already. It is an interesting shot and I went out of my way to get it but it isn't that good. Must be climate related is what I am thinking.

Looks like a powerful camera! Thanks again for telling me about it. I have been taking smaller cameras like the G12 on some trips to keep the bulk down. That is in addition to a bunch of GoPros in lieu of a DSLR unless I have some particularly serious shooting to do. I do like hands free zooming and the lack of interchangeable lens for some types of shooting. Then again in photography, for everything you get, you give something up.
