Maybe im not seeing it. But did he just jump off the top of the mountain and drift down or was he using the updraft to pull him up?

the kite is a 21m flysurfer.actualy there is no wind just a slight breeze and the gravity effect.massive balls and a lot of faith to the equipment !!!who needs a para glider to fly!kites are much stronger if you concider that they have been made to crash and loop and still stay in one piece.that guy broke all the records.he deserves a prize and sponcors.

p.s.the parachute up there hanging from a kite is like the life vest in a passenger aircraft...totally USELESS!!!!

That was a huge flight but not even close to the longest flight time. I bet his arms were tired after that flight! Why say his reserve parachute is worthless?

You are making some wrong assumptions.

1) Kites are not built to the tolerances and strength as Paragliders. Because of the speeds involved in Flying the forces on the Wings is tremendous. Paragliders have are built to be able to handle the higher forces, kites are not. The weak point will be the lines and line attachment points. If he is unlucky and loops the kite at the wrong time the forces will snap the lines or rip the kite.

That brings me to:

2) The Rescue Parachute is not useless in this situation. The chances are very high that something can go wrong during kite "flying" and the rescue chute will save your life. They save hundreds of paraglider lives every year.

UAH -- it "Wasn't" worthless !!

Fact is : most of his flight , he was WELL ABOVE the minimum acceptable
altitude required, for a reserve deployment ; it's the guys that are flying within
100 -200ft from the ground, that should consider a reserve as being Useless.

A broken HG or PG, will NOT reach terminal velocity, because of the drag
from the broken machine.

I once broke a HG and had to Chucked-Laundry at about 450ft at Torry-Pines Ca.
The chute didn't open and i had time to pull it all the way back in, and re-deploy.
It opened at 10ft . Yes Very Lucky that time for me ; that happened in the late 80's.

SO -- Now Ya know WHY i advise against flying on equipment that can't take
at least 3-4G's in turbulence; which a water-kite can-NOT.

This flight i made last month from a mountain in Nv, on a borrowed Rogallo wing,
had to be the most mellow flight i made in the last 10 years. The fastest
i ever went up in a thermal during the entire 40min in the air, was probably
50 - 100ft/min. I Still encountered turbulence strong enough to make my
suspension lines go slack hard enough to pull part of my breakfast out
of my stomach ; a water kite woulda Broke, and most of the flight i was within
50 - 200ft from the ground, ((below reserve altitude)). This HG was made to
take such abuse in the air, is Your wing ?

Hold your horses guys!!!You are saying that if a line broke and goes to an uncontroled loop situation he will try a)eject the kite b)eject the leash c)control the downfall and be in the correct position to deploy the paracute....come on you must be Felix to do that !!!!

As for the lines...I have a bar wich i use only in snowkite and it is new(i rebuilt every season) and after a midle line breakage during a megaloop i have also one..(lucky to survive after that with 2 broken ribs)

You don't know how the reserve chute works, do you?

Especially with a kite it is way easier to deploy it than with a paraglider which is collapsed and possibly tangled around you.

Also he is not using a leash. Having a leash attached for this would be useless.

Gunnar I had an idea in my head that the big speed could be rigged as paragliders? Is this not the case?

I wonder if he is using stock lines/ attachements? it looks stock. I know a guy who glides off mountains with both speed wings and kites. he rigs his kites with 1200kg lines and beefs the attachment points up also.
