Naish Fly 15m or Ride 14m 2013 for light wind fun

Postby TheMaitomies » Wed Apr 03, 2013 8:45 pm

Hi, I'm new to these forums but from what what I read it seems like there is a very helpful community here. I wanted to ask some of the guys who have had some experience with either of these kites. I have checked the forums and couldn't find enough info for a comparison ( mainly not much for the Ride 2013)

I'm a beginner looking to buy my first kite. I weigh 72kg or 158lbs and the area that I live have on average 8 knot days so I'm looking into a light wing kite. I know the Fly is designed for these light wind conditions but I'm a bit concerned when using it in slightly stronger winds like 15 knots or so. The Ride 14m is my other option but I'm not sure if I'd be able to have fun at 8knots or so.

Any help regarding either of these kites is great. Thanks

I´ll try to help.

If you are beginner, you will have trouble flying kites in lowest winds and highest winds of the manufacturer stated windrange.

In low winds you will make flying errors and not get the best power from the kite.
In higher winds your flying and board skills will be weak and you will not be able to safely control the kite or board.

This means that a beginner needs to have more kites than an experienced kiter. If you have a lot of 8-10 knot days you will need to ride a big light wind board and have a 15-17m kite specifically for light wind. You will not be able to hold this kite in more than 15-16 knots even on small board in the beginning.
If you get 14-20 knot winds you will need a 12m kite. to go with a 17. or a 10-11m to go with the 15m

Its a lot of money to get started. That extra kite is going to set you back- but you will on the water much more ( if you get 14-20 knots) and you will learn faster and safer. If you are smart you get 2 kites that have same bar.

Next year you can get a 7 or 9m kite for higher winds if you ever get them- Then you are set with 3 ktie quiver.

I think the answer for you is gonna be the FLY.

Yeh you will probably be hanging onto it at 15 but in one kite quivers sacrifices have to be made!

I wonder though.........The Ride and Fly are similar design, two struts etc and ones 14m and the others 15m. Can anyone tell me why the Fly is £350 more for an extra meter of kite?

Thanks for the replies. I'm leaning towards getting the Fly since it will be easier for me as a beginner at 8 knot winds and could buy a smaller kite later to add to my collection. I'm very curious also to know their differences like Zeek said.

At your weight using the fly in 15 knots should be possible, but you'll be very very powered.

The real point would be: what is the average wind speed on a regular day. Do you tighten up while under stress?

In the beginning, just to get going, you will need a little more power than later..but you still do not want to be super lit. Both those kites will have big wind range., but like Tom was saying in the beginning you'd probably are not looking to the bottom bottom end. It take some experience to fly in super light winds.

I think both those kites will do fine but of the windrange is rerally what yuou describe you'd be better on the fly.

When you use it, consider adding a light wind relaunch line. It will help a lot in the ultra light wind relaunches. Also do not forget to pump the LE up hard enough. Beginner mistake to try to save the kite by under inflating. If you see any kinks in the kite while using it you have to pump it up harder.

8 knts is about the lowest wind possible so you'll definitely need the bigger kite. I would even suggest you look at a 17m kite for that low wind and you will have to use a light wind board too.

Learning in 8 knots will be extremely hard to do as well. It's much easier to learn in 18 knots with a 10m kite so you might want to consider a kite holiday to learn in better conditions.

I dunno the size, but the fly definitely can hold up with a bigger class kite.

Fly is a 15m according to Naish info, but I've never flown one.

Flite 17. Similar shape to the Fly, but better low end and upwind. For me...
