RRD Religion 2013/2014

Postby rogerkite » Thu Jul 18, 2013 11:08 am

hello,
Just want to share few pictures of the new Religion wave kite from RobertoRiccidesign brand.
Seems very similar to the previous ones, slight modifications for the colors, and it seems also that some modification have been applied for the design (thicker diametre leading edge on the small sizes for more stability when the wind is strong and gusty, better de-power, the 10.5 and 12m² are slightly lighter for a better response in the light wind). But still heavyduty construction!!
I hope to have soon the opportunity to test them and share a report!

I usually ride the Obsession and last week I tested my girlfriend's new 7m in Tarifa...
At first sight i noticed the quite fat LE at the tips, same bulletproof reinforcements of the canopy as last years', one big inflate-deflate valve, a very stiff structure when inflated.
I was riding strapless my Domingo in quite gusty wind (let's say 10-20kn) and flat water and I felt the kite very light on the bar, thus reactive even if not fully powered; this allowed me to sinus it for minutes when the wind dropped down, without feeling any sore; on the other hand when hit by gusts, the kite feels very stable and glides forward.
Compared to my Obsession in seems to have less punch, but a way smoother power delivery even if this feeling may be biased by the lack of wind. I noticed that, compared again to the Obs, in a gybe the Religion is always forward and It never stalled.
I reached land some 300m downwind and even if in marginal wind I could climb up again with no problem to keep the kite flying.
Hope to test it again in better conditions, maybe waves :naughty:

I've had the new 10.5m2 and 7m2 Religion's for about a month and having had the last 3 versions, must say that this years are excellent in every respect.

I was initially worried in selecting a 10.5m2 as whilst gaining slightly on the lower end, previously the bigger sizes have not been as quick to turn on the face of the wave with the inevitable lag - so last year by biggest size was a 9m2. Anyway, having tried the new one in a variety of conditions, I needn't of worried. Even in the lightest of conditions, it gets moving very quickly if you work the kite, build up some apparent wind and your away. My lightest wind sessions so far have been in 3-4ft onshore on a 5'4" Firewire Vanguard in maybe 10 kts. I was staying upwind fairly easily and the kite would still drift/turn quickly as required -very impressive. Some guys tried to come out on 12m2 and twinnies but gave up fairly quickly. Being substantially built (92kg), I was quite surprised. Might have been down to the vanguard though - bloody amazing board. I'm sure I'll break it soon because its pretty fragile but incredible that it planes so early and yet turns so tight on the face.

At the other end of the scale, I was down in Hossegor earlier in the month and we had some fairly strong winds one evening with a good 18 to 20 kts/10 ft face. I only took the 10.5m2 as I wasn't expecting any wind but it really handled - no overpowering on the face, just pure direct control. Normally I would have changed down to a 7m2 as early as possible but shows the significant range of the kite.

I haven't tried the 7m2 yet as for once we have had a proper summer. Last years was my go to kite as it was a peach, so I'm sure this years will be even better. Roll on Autumn wind and waves.

Think you need to chill a bit man.

There's no bias here. I'm not affiliated to anyone expect my own love of the sport and I've kited for a very long time on a shit load of kit. The 2014 Religion's a very good wave kite in my opinion. There isn't too much difference between 2013/2014 but incremental improvement as always and I'm pleased I bought them.

Obviously you haven't ridden one but I'm glad you feel good about yourself bashing someone else's comments, fair play if that makes you feel the man....... I get my kicks out in the break myself!!!!

Hello,

Really good feedback mickywoosh.
I'm 65kg, and I have tested for the moment the 10.5 & 8.
My feeling is the same as you guy: the kite is "lighter" in the air than last year, and the bar pressure is a little bit less present.
During the first 10min of the first session (10 to 14 knots), I felt disapointed as I thought the kite as less power than my MKIII 10m. But, the kite is moving faster in the air, and at the end, if you "play" with it, it creates tis own wind, and you are planning!! Also, you can shorten the rear lines from 1 knot, it helps for the light wind.
As last year, the kite is very stable, very reactive, and more "linear" in the movement. Also, the depower seems to be more progressive.
At the end, testing the 8m with wave shows that the kite is for me better than last year because it is "smoother", with a more constant traction and less power at the bottom turn.
Again, these feed back as to be validated with others sessions (as soon as possible!!), but I would say that the kite is in the same "spirit" as the previous version, the feeling is "lighter".
Note that for the 10.5 and 12, the Dacron in the canopy has been replaced by classic spi.

Does the 10.5 really have more surface area than the previous 10, or is it just bla?
How exactly has the weight been reduced (no dacron on the canopy is great, anything else? Those strut ends metallic things look heavy!
Does the new valve need an adaptor like cabrinha's?

Lobodomar, your questions are under review! I will compare the surface and weight of both kites.
For the inflation, the "big" connector, supplied with each pump (from all brand) has to be used. No specific adaptator is needed.
