Maui Winds and Rules North Shore

I will be in Maui the first week in September and have 3 questions.

First.......When a beach like HoKipa says no Kiting ,they mean we can't even launch there for an downwinder?
Second....What winds to expect,... is this a strong year?
Third......Is Kihei the best compromise between price, avaliability, and distance for an apartment?

never tried to launch there but since you mention a downwinder you're looking for waves? early sept. is usually too early. I never visit for waves before late oct. to be safe. 1st week of sept. should still be summer conditions strong 20-30 winds. Kihei is about 20 minutes away. good prices. I like staying at the north shore too but a bit more work to find a place. try vrbo.com. also the windsurfers are very organized so try to google something like 'windsurf maui north shore condo' and I bet you'll find something.

Best beaches to kite

1. Kite beach
2. Naish beach (200 m East of Kite beach) I prefer Naish Beach as it has cleaner wind to launch.
Kiting starts at 11:00 a.m. I like to get there at least 10:30 to set up and get a parking spot closer to beach

Wind should be 20 kts + on most days

Kihei is good if you have a nonkiter with you. Public tennis courts, beaches, restaurants, etc.

Kihei is good for local area. There is a place where I see kiters and windsurfers go near Lipoa and S. kihei road.

Naish/kite beach is the best place to go. For prices on housing....

Are you moving or renting a place for a week?

Paia should be fairly cheap. Fast access to kite beach from there. Who are you going with?

Thanks for all replies.
I am looking for the best waves for shure, that is why I imagine entering the ocean in Hookipa or as near as possible and sail down wind as much as possible, all the way to Kanaha or Naish beach.
What woories me is if acess to enter is permited in an non kiting beach like Hookipa, and at what distance the airport runway has to be cleared for an down wind leg. (again, if possible and permited)
I will travel with my wife and have booked a Condo in Kihei.

Paia should be fairly cheap. Fast access to kite beach from there. Who are you going with?

Where in Paia can you stay for less than $125./ night?

Nalu Kai lodge in Paia was $110/night when I was there for a week last August. Talk to Maria and tell her you're a kiter.

My girl and I stayed there for 2 weeks this past February and it was perfect for our needs. SUPER cheap, it has a shower/kitchen, washer/dryer outside, a full-size bed and a small bed above the drivers area. If you go with that, be sure to tell the Paolo you're a kiter and he might give you a little discount

You can launch from Lanes, maybe 600 yards west of Ho'okipa. A little bit of a sketchy launch. Not a lot of beach and you enter the water over a rock shelf. You'll want booties. Early sept is just prior to the start of wave season, but right there will be the best wave's you'll find. You could do a long downwinder from there to kite beach, but you'll have to go pretty far offshore as you'll pass the airport runway zone - see the map here: http://www.mauikiteboardingassociation. ... emaps.html

First: When it says no kiting it means no kiting. It's like in high school, where no running means no running, no speed walking, not backwards, not on your toes - it means NO. Period
Second: It either blows or it's just a puff. If you have a chance then you should bring two kites, a big one and a small one.

Just been for 2 weeks, had the most awesome time, groundhog day for kiting, needed to go into an old peoples home after day 2, ended up feeling fit and healthy at end of trip, got on aeroplane - got off back home - sick as a dog.. Bloody airplanes...
