Are the kite companies doing a better job of controlling their inventory? Seems like most really good deals are offered on a very limited stock that is drop shipped from the manufacturer. All of the dealers are actually advertising the same physical inventory and there is a good chance your order can't even be filled after you paid for it.

AFAIK generally how it works is gear is sold in shops at RRP to RRP-15% or so, until ...
I don't know the jargon of the business, but I am fairly sure there are entities that buy (typically in November or December) unsold gear for <<RRP, probably <wholesale, giving cash to the retailers to plow into next year pre-orders (or whatever else, e.g. paying their rent during winter etc.).
This gear then makes its way to market via internet sales through shop portals, etc. Some shops may use fulfillment centers for phone and web orders, these may be the same entities. Some shops may trade back and forth between each other as well.
Some interesting opportunities may happen on the fringes, for example, a possibly huge discount the day before the remaining inventory would go to one of these kite consolidator types.
Or, similar big (but likely not quite as big) discounts on stock held back after the bigger deals have been done...
Basically there is some pricing disturbance sometime around Thanksgiving, occasionally you can work it. Or you may see higher prices for a bit if you miss the boat.
But Black Friday?
Is that when we line up at midnight and stab each other for a chance to buy kites at themall?
I try to buy used!
