Anyone else riding their motorcycle to go kiting?

Postby FredBGG » Thu Jul 16, 2015 5:17 pm

I've started to ride my motorcycle to go to the beach to go kiting.

If you do too let's see your setup!

Here is mine:

and here is a photo taken from the road I drive down to go to the beach.

Apart from the enjoyment of riding the motorcycle through the canyons on the way to the beach I have found that I'm way less stiff and tired when I get home. It's because I'm not pinned down to a car seat and stuck in the cage of a car. I move around on every turn, I stand on the pegs a lot of the time. The vibration of the bike is a sort of massage. Best of all I don't get drowsy. I really enjoy the ride back.

I also have a terrific sound system in the helmet and listen to music on the rides.

The only down side is longer packing and both kiting gear and riding gear to deal with.
I ride with serious gear. Full body under armor and riding jacket, riding pants, tall riding boots and a motorcycle air-bag vest.

I can even load my 6' 8" Mini Gun surfboard. It's a super light hollow carbon fiber Aviso.
I even went to the local CHP office and had them look over my setup. We even took out the traffic code booklet and my setup is unto code and 100% legal. :thumb:

Only risk is if I fall to the right I could get a ticket for surfing on public roads :thumb:

I've loaded as much as 3 kites, two surfboards and camping gear.

Best of all is that handling is really still great. Even comfortable going down dirt roads.

The bike is the fantastic Yamaha Super Tenere. 1200cc "dirt bike" that will also cruise down freeways effortlessly.

Does anyone know if there are high viz surfboard bags out there?

I am fortunate to live just a few minutes from Mokuleia Beach here on Oahu. I just strap my board and harness to the box on my KLR and wear my kite/bar pack. All the tuners get jealous of my downforce! Not really. Parking is never an issue. Just have to watch for pedestrians -- all to easy to introduce someone to the edge of the board I suppose. Anyone who's been to North Shore knows that we roll casual around here. No worries, just aloha.

I gotta' hand it to you guys. I am totally impressed.

(With apologies for the carbon boot-print, I drive a F250 pickup truck.)

I've seen guys in the Caribbean riding scooters with foil boards hanging off the side. Seems like a good way to keep the bad dogs at bay. :o

Bought this beat up F650 6 months ago, and it came with a home made surf rack. It's kinda goofy, and drags on the ground if I corner too hard to the right, but damn, it actually works pretty well. Fun to use too. The front rack is clamped to the engine crash bars, and the rear section just clamps on to the rear footpeg. I've even taking a 10 foot SUP on it, but that was a bit much. Carries a couple boards no problem though. Makes the ride to the beach that much more enjoyable!

I might try a carver surf rack to get the board a bit higher up, but I don't have a good place to mount it yet. So far so good!

Nice bike!

I don't think the carver rack is a good choice for you.

Take a look at some crash bars for the bike. They make some for your bike that are pretty high up. What you do is attach the board to the crash bar and to the side of your side case. I have found that this is the beat place. Still high enough to not touch the ground while cornering, good for aerodynamics and the safest position.... even protects one leg incase of a fall.

That is how I mount mine. Put your board on with the bottom facing out.

Crash bars look like this:

You want to get a nice large and wide crash bar. Leaves more room for your feet.

You might want to put couple of strap guides on you side case.

I used these:

They are called Footman Loops 2in

They are stainless steel. 4 cost about $14.

Best thing about using a crash bar for the front and case at the back is that you can mount bigger surfboards. Also having the board lowish and flush by your side means you have less wind issues when riding. Both front and side wind.
