Anyone know the diameters of q power line?

There is normal Q power that is quite thick compared to most other kite lines, and Q power pro, which is 30% smaller and comparable with more standard line sets. The diameter seems to matter less to over all drag compared to the frequency that the lines oscillate at while flying. Q power is perfectly round in cross section so it oscillates at a much higher frequency than kite line that is more squared or flat cross section. The amplitude of the sin wave that it cuts through the air is smaller despite its larger cross section. The higher frequency of Q power line is actually audible while flying. It sounds a bit like a tie fighter! The lower frequency at which most kite lines oscillate is not audible.

This is taken directly from their site:

"Round cross-section helps minimize ribboning effect. - What is ribboning effect?

- The tendency for normal hollow braided Spectra line to flatten and then act like a ribbon in the air, vibrating back and forth. Thereby having a much greater effective drag than the apparent static diameter would suggest.

Q-POWER LINE’s internal core bundle of fibers resists the tendency to flatten out and when compared to traditional braided line Q-POWER LINE has a very round cross-section. This round cross-section minimizes the effective diameter and drag. Traditional braided line can have an effective diameter of up to 5X the lines static diameter, substantially increasing parasitic drag."

There is a data sheet on their site, but it doesn't mention line diameter.... It also seems to have type setting issues!

Thanks for that it never occurred to me that is what causes that noise. I must say my hollow core lines like the liros stuff looks pretty round, some of the non hollow is a bit square. Maybe something to do with the odd vs even number of yarns.

Out of http://www.powerline-sports.com/PDFfile ... -01-13.pdf I believe it has the diameters.

Q-PowerLine
91 kg (200 lb)
0.8 - 0.9 mm
136 kg (300 lb)
1.0 - 1.2 mm
272 kg (600 lb)
1.6 - 1.7 mm
454 kg (1000 lb)
2.0 – 2.1 mm

Q-PowerLine Pro
272 kg (600 lb)
1.4 - 1.5 mm

Liros DC series for comparison

mm daN
0,50 40
0,60 60
0,80 100
0,85 120
1,10 160
0,83 175
1,60 200
1,10 267
1,80 300
1,50 445
1,60 580
2,05 500

Q power pro is better than the older DC but only comes in one size, the newer DC is a lot thinner and stronger than Q power pro.

I see power line sports recommends spectra for sewing Q power line. Thin fishing braid could be used to do this.

There are a bunch of us using q line pro from kiteboarding.com with seasons of use. No issues with the stitching they use on the line ends.

Its not about being stronger -

1. With an outer sheath and inner core, it's easier to see damage to the outer sheath and replace before the inner core fails vs traditional single core line which fails with damage. It's about wearing better.

2. Many of my factory line failures have been due splicing with the inner line hardened to make the line easier to splice but this causes the line to wear from the inside out. q line pro with knots or stitching avoids this failure since q line cannot be spliced.

I am totally done with crappy factory lines. My optimal bar is a Ozone Race bar with q line pro and a bag of spare cam cleats from Annapolis Performance Sailing so I can swap cleats as soon as they wear every 2-3 months or so.

Sorry I meant just on stats of strength and diameter.

Cored lines are great for preventing total failure while in use.

Dont agree with parts of it but interesting. Line sorting method is good I came up with it 10 years ago :-)

Some of these figures surprised me:
http://www.southernropes.co.za/media/ca ... alogue.pdf Page 3

Diameter. Super 12. GP 12
1.5 440kg. 578kg
1.75 590kg 704kg
2 880kg 1000kg

Hard to imagine 10-12 people dangling off 2mm 'string'!

For info quite a lot of this stuff can be sourced on eBay (uk).

It is a very strong material. I wonder how thin lines will be in another 50 years. I wonder how much more improvement can be gotten out of Polyethylene.

Those numbers are extremely good. 1mm 300kg for the super 12 is awesome pity they don't make anything thinner. The GP 12 numbers are almost unbelievable.
