Of course, wakestylers land much faster and therefore need a tight locked in strap/boot.
Loose straps is an option for strictly hooked riders only.

two things 1) it's not very styling riding boots on a big wave surfboard more stylish on waves and 2) you get held down longer when a wave crunches you to the bottom. it's unpleasant.

Hi.
Lisfranc injuries ar not that common in any sport let alone kitesurfing.
The problem with one foot coming out of a footstrap means the board on the one leg hugely increases the leverage of the foot so any small force applied to the board is magnified by the time it gets to your leg. The same applies to skis when skiing and why knee injuries are so common - the rotational force from the ski is magnified by the time it gets to your leg.
Your foot will be more protected in boots as they are less likely to come out and will give your foot some support. Strapless will also mean you won't have the same mechanism of injury but your foot will be working harder on the board as it won't have any support.
If you are back running and biking you should be able to get back kiting. It might be worth trying a couple of lawn mowing sessions to get your foot used to it without the increased risk of falls when doing tricks.
Good luck

I've broken a foot skateboarding before, wacking it on a metal balance beam. I injured my achilles tendon (took 6 months to heal) with sharp debris on the beach while bearing booties. Since then I've switched to wearing street shoes (like wake skate shoes). I no longer get sore feet while kitesurfing. The trick is to wear a neoprene sock (for warmth) inside your shoes which keeps all of the sand out of your shoes. I used to have to replace booties after 6 months of use, my street shoes last several seasons. I'm also a big fan of riding strapless.
Best of luck. If your Dr. recommends that you keep off your feet to heal, follow his recommendation to speed up the healing process. When I broke my foot, I was still active (wore through the heel in the cast in the first month) and my bone wasn't healing so he threatened to put in a screw. I took it easy the second month and was able to avoid having a screw in my foot.

Thowing into an old post, just been diagnosed with a Lesfranc injury with associated fracture. Op tomorrow and buoyed by the positive posts above of solid recovery and kiting again! Got this by trying to jump a wave going out on a strapped surfboard, misjudged the timing and feet both stayed in straps but impact was like a hammer and absorbed by the my front (left) foot. Thought I'd shattered everything the pain was so intense. Luckily boat was nearby and managed to rescue me as was outside reef in big'ish swell. Not the greatest way to end a Mauritian holiday and first time at epic One Eye! Sigh.
