Windy + All-inclusive resort + August + Carrib or Mexico

Postby michaelb1 » Sun Feb 07, 2016 12:31 am

I am taking my sister on a much needed vacation in August. She's not a kiter but I want her to enjoy some rest, relaxation, and a little luxury. ALSO I would like to get in some kite sessions in warm water.

Any suggestions? Cabarete is obviously an option. She'll be flying from Houston so I can factoring in the cost of airfare.

I need to balance airfare costs and wind conditions in August.

Anybody been kiting in Jamaica?
Thanks,
MB

Puerto Rico is decent in August... San Juan / Isla verde is a pretty economical location with good hotels. Caribbean in general is hit or miss in August as its the start of transition to rainy season. But Ive had some pretty good days there in August. But like any trip planned around an action sport needing nature to cooperate - its hit or miss.

Absolutely - I might just avoid Windham Tangerine... heard bad things, but don't have any personal experience.

What did you hear kitedr?

I was there and had no problems. Rooms are not that luxury though.
Food is ok.

If Cabarete staying in Millenium or similar places are very nice.
No all inclusive though.

From some guys I went to Buen Hombre with and then another couple who talked with me after a gig - both said their rooms were fairly dirty and the food was bad enough it made them go up the beach and buy most their meals. I recognize that's just one experience, and honestly I've never been to an all inclusive myself so I have nothing to compare it to. :) But hey, I guess if you're just looking to sleep and have some food available, might not be bad... and it could be cheaper overall than some of the other spots on the beach - but I bet you can find some good deals on studios.

I ended up booking a cruise out of Galveston that stops in Honduras and Mayan Riviera.
I've already reached out to the local kite school in Roatan, Honduras. http://www.kitesurfroatan.com

They're going to pick us up at the pier and take us out to their kite island/sand bar.
He said they get a lot of 20kts days in August. We'll see

I can speak for Jamaica. I stayed at the Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall late March. Had good wind for two days. Took a taxi "off campus" about 15 minutes drive and the instructor met me at the beach with all the gear. Good time. We had the beach to ourselves and a rasta shack down the way. A little sketchy but felt safe with the instructor. One of the highlights of the trip. I really don't like all inclusive hotels but this one was better then most. Dont miss the jerk shack!

Were there a couple of kite-friendly beaches available? Or is everything blocked by resorts? Do you have any contacts, looks like the people who have schools are not replying to my e-mails...

Hi There dchatzis,
It's been a couple of years so my memory is hazy and I couldn't find any of my notes from that trip. I'm fairly certain that it was Kite Boarding Jamaica. Here is a link:
http://kiteboardingjamaica.com/Kiteboar ... ation.html
I recall it is run by a German lady who is a kiter and photographer and her Jamaican boyfriend(?) who was my instructor. It was away from the resorts and I think that you will have better results calling once you are "on Island".
Let us know when you return.
Good Luck - CW
