Early May Caribbean Spots w Great Wind?

Postby Osprey1 » Wed Mar 09, 2016 10:09 pm

My wife has given me a week away from the family to take a kite trip the first week of May and I was wondering in early may what places in the Caribbean have the most consistent wind & flat water?

Right now I'm looking at Honduras, but can go anywhere

Thanks for the intel

U must been under the thumb too long cause honduras is as far west as you go in Caribbean... ;)
Fwiw a local retired now spends a lot of his time @ Little Corn, Nica. Flat water and plenty wind he says. Dunno 'bout seasons there myself tho.
As far as eastern Caribbean, either the summer trades will have started by then, or not...

Turks & Caicos. (Technically the TCI are just outside the Caribbean, but close enough) Disclaimer: Except for death and taxes, there are no guarantees in life (or wind consistency).

If you don't mind using the 17m kite Turks and Caicos should deliver 10 knots plus. But what if it's only 10, no plus?
As a west coaster you might expect 15-20 minimum for a good sesh. I did when I was there!

Maybe try Barbados? But involves chop and waves I think. However, it's about as windy and as far east as you can go in the Caribbean. By the stats you should be good in May, avg 17mph.
Bonaire has similar wind stats and flat water.

I'm heading to TCI later this month, expect to fly 12&17m clouds fwiw. I hope. First trip for me but friends have all used 14-17m there.
May might be iffy for much of the Caribbean but when you gotta go, you gotta go!
Best wishes

Aruba would be my choice for wind but you will have small chop, waves on the east coast (Boca Grande) and flat water on the west coast.
From your location I would not rule out Maui, San Francisco, South Padre Island.

Since I also enjoy diving it seems Bonaire might be a great spot (one can only kite so many hours a day). I've also heard the wind is straight offshore there, but there are rescue boats. Any thoughts on Aruba vs. Bonaire?
