Not sure why this is happening. Anyone?

Postby noel » Wed Apr 13, 2016 1:35 am

So, I have been repairing kites for 15 year and this is a first for me. I fixed a bladder for a customer and when I was removing the center strut on a 2014 Airush Lithium, I noticed a weird curvature to it. I thought it was the bladder but when it is inflated outside the kite, the bladder is straight. When inserted into the kite, it curves asnin the pics. Can't figure it out. Has anyone heard of shrinking stiching or material?

I can't see on the picture but on my oldest kite (1.5y) a few rings developed due to the stitching getting loose.
There were 2 ring near the strut stiching on each side
Local repair shop reinforced leading edge to fix it.

They did a good job.

not sure if the kite had bad stiching, pump it too hard or if I worked it a bit too hard. Had a few inversion and self rescue in waves...

EDIT
Never mind you are talking about shape of strut? That I don't know but I have heard that if there is a kink it can end up with weird shape and some kite like ozone edge have some pretty weird shape as well.

check to see if the customer had a strut repair too. could be the seam was accidentally shortened when it got fixed. only thing I can think of that would cause this.

Fabric can definitely warp/shrink/stretch/change. The stresses that a kite experiences would tend to form a shape like that. You must be able to look for differences in the fabric, pull out a magnifying glass. To fix I would guess you cut and resew the entire thing maybe making it a bit thinner.

Max - Not surewhat that would do as it is already stiff.

No center strut repairs and everything looks good. The 2 side struts are straight. Not sure if it changes its flite characteristics. It's a stumper I guess.

It's called black stitching on white material. You can see it on the otherside as well. Looks funny in the pic but totally fine when you look at it differently. You can see from the other pics that there is no repair.
