Use a figure-8. A little more bulk than the overhand and less slippy.

I recommend using two (2) 1"ID stainless steel round rings. Works waaaay better than just one. Using only one ring puts too much stress on both the rope and even more so on the CL - don't do it! Two rings slide much easier on the rope. Not seeing any wear on either CL or rope.

I am absolutely astonished that anyone would spend thousands of dollars on kite gear but then be so stupid as to balk at spending a few dollars on such a critical safety item as a short length of dyneema rope. Unbelievable.

Your rope looks overly worn to me. To get more life out of amsteel rope, you need to make the rope a dual layer by splicing it. This prevents the rope from folding, which stresses the fibers unevenly.

Yes, 4mm spliced into 4mm is about 5.7mm
I splice 3mm SK75 full length inside 5mm SK75 making it about 5.8mm - this gives a slightly smoother outer running surface than 4mm/4mm. I then tie each end using figure-of-8 then run a few hand stitches through each knot using medium whipping twine to prevent any slippage.

Every 2 months is probably excessive. Just fix it when it looks frayed.
The hts-90 is a waste. Granted you're only spending $8 instead of $2, but 4x the cost for an incremental improvement doesn't pencil out. Abrasion is our problem, not stretch or absolute breaking strength.
