Weight of LEI kite sizes ?

Postby Peter_Frank » Wed May 18, 2016 9:33 am

Hi all

Interested in the weight of different kitesizes in the SAME kiteseries.

So if some could weigh their kites (dry without lines/bar but with bridles if present), one decimal is fine no matter if kg or lbs ? :thumb:

Important thing is they are from same year and are equal meaning same number of struts.
As often the smallest 4 or 5m2 has less struts, and the really big sizes are made "lighter" so avoid these then, or write that it has two struts less or whatever the difference.

I got two myself, a 7 and a 9m2 from same year I will weigh later.

You dont have to write the brand or name of the kite, does not matter - as it is NOT about light kites nor heavy kites (each has their huge advantages in terms of being able to cope with tough conditions or not, and last)
The more sizes you got in the very same series, the better the information will be of course.

But the weight of different sizes same model, t.ex

Same series same year 5 strut kite:
7m2 2.8kg
9m2 3.4kg

Just an example.

Great with a forum like this for this very thing, should be possible to find the correlation(s) this way quite fast, if some want to help a bit

Thank you !

Hello Peter:
Here is a chart of weight vs flat and proj area. Some are 2015 models. Newer versions have different strut construction and reduced bladder sizes which reduce weight. Aspect ratios and other data can be found on the website. It is interesting to note that the weight/area numbers drop with bigger sizes.
Cheers!

In my mind measuring dead weight is only good for airlines. What is the pumped up mass with kite+air divided by projected area.

Thanks till now, also Hansen for reposting the Switch weights.

Just keep them coming, if others could weigh 2 or more from their same kite series same year :thumb:

To joriws, I tried to explain that it was NOT in order to compare kites I found it interesting - but to find the size correlations as they are of course not linear, as Hansen also noticed :D

And here a forum like this is perfect !

But mass of air probably increases as kite size increases. And there was comparison of kite weight by area+projected area. And a note that weight by area goes down as kite size increases. But actually it has more air in it thus being heavier in usage condition so weight per area is not going that fast down.

Excellent data till now !

Anyone else with other kites (same number and struts or none, same year model) they would weigh ?

It is sufficent with two kitesizes in a series, as they seem to be very linear :thumb:

Having other models will give a more complete picture regarding the correlation, thank you :D

I own two OR cyphers but the biggest one has a repair. That has added some weigth. This would spoil your correlations.
