Show some respect Dylan. Cab Rider has over a dozen years invested in quality of kiting for the community, preservation of access, benefiting all kiters including yourself in South Florida and beyond. He is a solid guy with a lot on his plate with little time for forums but he tries to provide input at times when he can.

I have very little time on the 2017 Contra, two sessions, one with the 19 in lighter winds and with a 14 m in the Keys in moderate winds. Both sessions went very well but I wasn't in wind extremes.

Regarding the 2015 17 m Contra, I have a ton of time on that in light to wind 20 kts in gusts (more than once). It is an EXCELLENT performing stable kite in wide wind conditions speaking from long personal experience. It was my go to kite for a good portion of the last two years. Of course I am used to riding with larger kites having a need to return to where I have come from in roundwinders. Kites are adjusted each year, regarding 2017, I would listen to what Cab Rider has to say.

Apollo has high AR and flat flying shape. For sure very efficient kite as a LEI. It would be interesting to know how close race foil kites it performs, or against Speeds.

I think four struts is a good compromise. Kite has high count of panels like FX in its LE, aerodynamically good thing and no doubt structurally too. High cell/panel count makes kite look classy, I don't like some angular LE kites with very wide panels, they look cheap.

I'm wondering why they didn't make the Apollo in anything over 16m? Did the big test mules generate too much power? Or maybe they folded in half?

Gotta love when the cab clowns contradict themselves in the same breath.

Oh, contradict. I get it now. :thumb:

It's a horrible lightwind kite, really horrible.
I didn't like it either, 2016 15m. Was ok on the foil, wouldn't hold it's shape on the TT when loaded. Maybe it's better for little guys...
It's a light wind kite. It's not meant to ridden "loaded". The idea is to have good performance, quick steering, light bar, easy relaunch, and ability to unhook in the lower end of the wind range. If you want to ride loaded, we have other kites that will work much better like FX, Apollo, and Switchblade.
Didn't like the FX loaded either :D but it was excellent underpowered on the foil, very workable, nice loops made for fast powered gybes. Very impressed with how the Contra and the FX stayed in the air when the wind dropped though! Also, liked the bar pressure on both of those a lot more than the SB which is about the only thing I don't like about it but it's a big thing for me. I do think my next kite will be a Drifter, but can't decide on the size...

Hmm, wonder if we got a dud for demo. I thought maybe it was leaking but the LE still pinged the same as when I pumped it up.

Curious of how good of a jumper this kite is....

Can anyone comment?

A good jumper with a sort of "double" lift. It t stays longer in a peak of the flight.
Better than Velocity but difficult to tell my how much better.
With 20kts wind I reached 12,4m (WOO) on 7m on Moses Silente Foil. For me rather impressing. For you just peanuts...

Still don't know too much about 14m. Most of the time on 10 & 7m.
I am so desperate that I try it in doubtful winds - 2-4kts read on the beach and...
...every time I end up swimming back to a beach ;)
At least I learnt how to relaunch it in very light winds.
Let's say in winds below 7kts I have not managed to relaunch in the tradition way ("on reverse" from the power zone) like I used to do it with Velocity 14m.
I apply different technique: pulling one steering line and opposite power line allow to bring a kite closer to the window edge in half-vertical position.
Then relaunching is possible but it requires patience and good practice.

I got somewhere an idea Apollo had four struts, but it has normal five. Struts are thin though, and 5 is more than 4..

I saw once Vantage 18m kite which had only three struts. It fluttered very much when looped, sound was almost disturbing. But light kite of course. Airush had also strutless kites years ago, but they are not in production any more. Looks like Airush race LEI's are gone too.

I compared Apollo with the latest race foil kites with the same hydrofoils. Apollo can't make similar upwind. No mercy. However in downwinds it performs comparably.
I believe that high aspect inflatables will be developing. Neil Pryde is going to release FR:X kite soon. Hope it will be the next stage of Apollo development.
BTW - Apollo has not been registered in IKA:
