Here is a picture I got today from a friend who just got back from OBX just before the Hurricane hit.

Looks like it's a done deal. Stupid, but done.

I still think the southern NC needs these money more. The pontoon bridge lasted 5 years just fine, so this construction can wait 5-10 more years.

islanders held stronger values and weren't allowing government
Seriously sounding like an ass, unless you have some secret way of intimidating the fed and state govt and forcing them to your will.
True, long ago when they took over Ocracoke, a lot or buildings caught fire in the same night and there just wasn’t enough water to put out the fire at the park service...
But that does not reflect good values either!

I am sorry, but there is so much stupidity in this thread I have to weigh in. If you are not informed you need to shut up.

1. Everyone is so sad about people losing their sound side view, and would prefer the option where the bridge is on the West side. That is so stupid. Instead of people having a bridge in their back yard you would have more people with a bridge in their front yard. It is just a different group of people being compromised. So who do you want to be sad for?
2. The person who says their is plenty of land to the west of S=turns has not walked that ground. I hate to tell you that is Federal land, and not an option. All this talk about the locals voicing their concern is not an issue. If I live in Arizona or Kansas I have as much say on federal land in NC than people living in Rodanthe. Like it or not, that is the way it is.
3. The person who says there is 10 years before there is a problem, again has not walked the ground. Read this

You will see that the erosion rate at Mirlo is the highest on the Outer Banks. Mirlo washes over all the time. Even before Florence it was washing over. When Mirlo was built most of the locals said WTF. It was built on an area that routinely was an inlet.

Bottom line OBX has been moving SW and eroding for 17000 years, since that last ice age. Yes it is sad that we are losing prime kiting locations but that is a fact. There are much bigger problems than that. Look at the South End of the Bonner Bridge, and you think that will be OK in 5 years? It is not some political bullshit. It is just a fact.
Yes the bridge is inconvenient but there is a not a better solution. The future will be a lot of bridges like this.

I would hope they’re in terminal stage 4 stage of the project but apparently they’re still moving their stuff.

Whatever the stage it is, it looks like crap from get go and boys choose to keep their workplace to look like 3rd world country.

Hope federal funding stops for it and is diverted to areas suffering from the hurricane damage.

Other thing - whatever flag they’re flying over the cranes is not the favorite colors. Reminds me of ship owners running operations under Burkina Faso flags to cheat on the country and not paying taxes. And later they whine about protection they need when ther stuff is captured by pirates.

In this case the rebar stainless steel is coming from Europe. So much for creating domestic jobs. Just peachy for some and treacherous as far as I can tell.

Keep that Purina flags up and keep importing foreign labor for all your shops. True islander patriots.
