Foils in KOTA?

Postby Osprey1 » Fri Jun 10, 2016 4:18 am

After seeing dudes like Adam Whittington ride there is no doubt that one can boost much higher riding a hydrofoil than a twintip in similar conditions. To this end I'd love to see if a foiler in the KOTA could break the 100 ft mark. Would anyone else like to see a hydrofoil freestyler compete?

Not really. Close quarters, shallow, gusty wind, Lewis Crathern, Robby Naish, no.

There is no doubt they can go huge - up to them if it is worth the risk of falling onto their axe tho, can u imagine if that frenchie that face planted his board in the old KPWT had face planted a foil omfg!

I've never seen a video of a high jump with a hydrofoil. Any videos of that?

I only saw it in light wind. But impressive height for that little wind

Height is a derived from converting forward speed into vertical speed. In light wind hydrofoils can go a lot faster than TT's therefore they can jump higher. They also use the hydrofoil to convert horizontal speed to vertical without much losses. So. Light wind flat water should yield sweet boosts for the hydrofoil and better than a TT.

But as wind speed increases and TT board speed increases then the gap will close and there will be a point where TT can go faster than hydrofoil. Also if you add big kickers like the waves at KOTA then you have a better ramp than the hydrofoiler plus less weight.

So.... My conclusion is that hitting kickers in side shore conditions at 30-40 knots on a TT will boost higher than a hydrofoil attempting to jump on the flat in the same winds.

What plummet said.

Hydrofoils out jump TTs in flat water and moderate winds but once you have big ramps and 30 knot winds TTs will easily out boost them.
