What size kite would anyone recommend for langabaan in January, I have 8m, 11m , 12m and 17m
I can go to 38knts on 8 m kite do in need a smaller kite or will the above be good enough ?
11 typically before 3pm. 8 typically late afternoon / evening.
17 for those odd light wind days or Shark bay early in the day.
The wind tends to pick up during the day and can positively howl after 6pm.
My quiver would be 17,11,8,6.

Agreed to the last three replies, although for foiling at shark bay if it is high tide and you head west initially you can quickly get into deep water, then cruise way upwind.

Little skeptical about 8m for 38 knots, that’s Kevin Langaree territory unless you are really big. We had a day in Cape Town last December where I could not hold my 7m Pivot, then my 6m Cabo, and finally went to the Best shop and rented a 4m kite and was comfortable. Never ridden such a small kite before or since.

Leave the 17 at home (maybe even the 12), you'll be spoilt with so much kiting that you wont want to bother struggling with light winds and might even actually appreciate some off time. Big kites are just wasted baggage that time of the year around Cape Town or Langebaan.

Sorry, have to disagree. A 12m is useful for medium days, and for foiling if it is light. People think it always nukes in Cape Town and Langebaan, but it is not unusual to have a couple light days. Of course, you could use those for doing other things, but unless it involves a long drive, most other things can be done in the mornings.

He has an 11 too, so should he take the 11 and 12?

Disagree. In the mornings you can get the benefit of uncrowded water with a 17.

I guess we just see things completely different but if I’m kiting in proper conditions for 3-4 hours 5 days a week I don’t really feel like mowing the lawn in light conditions on a big old 17m bus. But ok, if there’s no baggage constraints then take all your kites so you can kite from sunrise to sunset (and take the next few days off to recover from the tendonitis, muscle strain and sunburn   ).

And the good news is they have finished resurfacing the link road between Langebaan town and the highway, so you no longer have to drive the long way up towards Velddrif and back down round. First hot days and breezes coming in now. 8)
