Bushflyr wrote:FWIW sand on the Antal ring is a total non-issue. I have somewhere between 500 and 1000 hours on mine all launching at sandy beaches and throwing it in the sand to lay out and there's zero appreciable wear on either the ring or the slider rope. I've actually heard about more issues with the pulleys than with Antal rings. They're REALLY good.
A thousand hours in a sandy environment with no discernible wear on either the Antal ring or the Dyneema SK75 rope? That's impressive.

Well, between 500 and a 1k. It's been in use a few years now and I kite pretty much every windy day. I don't really keep track of hours, but my bar is on its 3rd regrip and 2nd set of lines since I put it together. Previous lines snapped. So FWIW, the Antal and SK75 are holding up better than most of the other parts. I also crash a lot, so it does get rinsed out within the first 5 minutes of any given session.

It all depends on the quality of the Al2O3 surface. There are huge differences. Normal anodized Al2O3 wears off, whereas plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) makes a thick, near indestructible Al2O3 surface.

This is my version, using a Barton high load ring. Works well. The chicken loop comes off the ring when launching for the first time but then seems to stay in place under pressure:

Thanks. Good idea to measure from connection point, rope in this case - about 5", rather than from the spreader bar.

I should add that I've changed it since that picture was taken, so that the rope is at the top of the spreader so as to stop it twisting the bar up, and the second safety is now attached to the harness. Has worked ok in the three or four months I have been using it.
