Is Playa del carmen still kiteable

Postby not on board » Thu Sep 29, 2016 11:41 pm

Planning a winter trip to playa del Carmen Mexico and hope to kite while there. I wont have a lot of time and did not want to travel north of Cancun.
Older posts from 2014 talked about the beaches near Playa del Carmen restricting kiting due to crowds of beach users and swimmers.
Does anyone know if kiters still have access to the beaches near or just north of there?
Any up-to-date suggestions on best beaches near there?
Also any good shops to rent a board if needed? I am only bringing a smaller board.

thanks for your help.

Kited there in May 2015 briefly then kited a bunch in isla Holbox.

There were a few people launching directly from hotel, but beach is really crowded with guests and the beach is like 15 feet at low tide.
There didn't seem to be a traditional kite spot as such, there was a random kite here and there but people didn't seem to launch from same area.

A bit north of main hotel strip there is no one, I wasn't very comfortable launching over people in light wind condition so went there then did downwinder to hotel.

A lot of algae in water so don't drop line in there ;), my sister dropped a trainer kite and was a pain to sort out..

There is also a kite school further south but didn't go check it out.

In Tulum there were more kites around, waves and algae, it seemed windier.

Didn't do spot north of Cancun so can't comment about it.
I really loved isla HOLBOX, even though spots you can kite only at 2 spots (no kiting at hotels), its still nice spot and cute island. Wind was pretty nice too.

Hi,
I´m thinking about Isla Blanca in february, not far from Playa del Carmen. Any opinions would be grateful too.
Thanks a lot.

You might be able to launch from the beach without problems (at least I saw one dude doing that last Jan), but the official kiteboarding area is few kilometers down south from the main beach. There is a map on this site: http://www.welovetokite.com/destination ... el-carmen/

Isla Blanca is really awesome lagoon... just watch out for stingrays...

Stayed at the Azul Fives last Feb and I was able to kite just north of the hotel on a undeveloped section. Had some great advice from a few local kiters
regarding the current there. Wind was okay but up and down. Got three sessions in on a 14 and briefly on an 11.
Lots of traffic on the beach there, you want to have your shit sorted out in case you have any issues. Heading to Puerto Morelos in Feb, looks like a better
spot, barrier reef and all. Jbrook is a local there and has given me some advice in the past.
Cheers, Bob

That's not algae, it's sargasso seaweed.

Sorry to me it's the same thing they both translate to algue in French.

Googled it, apparently unless you are a biologist you can't tell difference. All explanation online are pretty confusing.

Anyway I don't have anything personal against algae, seaweed or plancton for that matter. I don't discriminate they are all good to me.

Playa is a great place to hangout, party, eat, etc. We have a place in El Cuyo, which is about 2 hours from Playa del carmen that has some great conditions for wind. Its a smaller quaint fishing village that exemplifies small town Mexico. Its smaller and chill though, so a bit different if you looking for more action and dont mind a lot less wind.

in english, algae is basically just slime, gooey stuff that grows on stuff in the water. seaweed (many different kinds) is like a plant (or is a plant, i dont know).

seaweed (this is the kind we get around here, sargassum):
