Any veteran partial knee replacement kiters out there?

Postby EricSanders » Thu Jan 12, 2017 10:21 pm

I had a partial left knee done end of November. Rehab is a piece of cake so far; full range of motion, no problem going up and down steps and minimal limp, (none if I concentrate). The big focus know is rebuilding my left quads and gaining stability.
I'm probably going to skip this season's kite skiing, but was curious how long it took before you got back on the water?
TIA
Eric

Hi
Had full knee replacement in 2014, was attempting to kite, about 3 months later, struggled but eventually figured it out.

now my left knee is gone and have trouble bending it ,when going right but am able to get it together, a little more each time I venture out

find the hardest part is getting the straps on but again each time is easier.

the more I kite the better it gets.

just keep at it and it will come

cheers

Thanks for the reply. It gives me hope that I should be ready for the spring winds!

Hi JD,

Was wondering what advice your surgeon gave regarding kiting with a full knee replacement. Is it something they recommend against doing given the high impact nature of the sport?

Thanks,

BG

I have a friend who had both knees replaced about 2 months apart and he was out kiting 4 months after the second surgery. BUT he was on a strapless surfboard for a while just to be "safer". Biggest thing is you Gotta do the rehab right.

I had total knee replacement on both knees at the same time five years ago. My doc is a kiter and all around jock. He gave me the go ahead for kiting 3 1/2 months out. I live and ride in the Gorge and spend my winters in Baja. Ride directionals both strapped and strap less. I am now taking up foiling.

The key is to go into surgery in very best shape possible. Find a physical therapist who is jock and is a kiter. Your first year will be painful, but it is good pain, strength rebuilding not injury pain. I am not a jumper, but I am no stranger to Gorge conditions.

If your in pain now don't put it off. You will recover faster when you younger. If both knees are bad do them at the same time. The recovery time is the same, why drag it out.

Cheers
Nik

Cool, thanks for the feedback. My right knee is pretty shot with osteoarthritis but, because I'm only 45, my surgeon thinks I'm too young for a total knee replacement. I think a partial replacement might be on the cards though in the near future...if I'm a suitable candidate that is.

What're the relative merits of a total replacement vs. a partial? From a kiter's perspective I mean...

Cheers, Bruce

Just for a little encouragement, I have a friend that's 70, with an 8 year old total knee replacement. He's still getting 3 meter jumps and is an avid mountain climber. I think you'll be fine....

Although this workout is focused more on surfing, it's very applicable to kiting also: http://surfstrengthcoach.com As I'm fast approaching 60, I've found that the stretches and workouts are very helpful to keeping flexible and in shape for both. You might benefit from some of the workouts before and after surgery.

Thanks Jwoo, that's really encouraging...anyone still kiting and climbing at 70 is pretty awesome in my book! Interesting link...I'll give it a shot.

This is just too weird. I commented on this post some time ago, now I'm in California getting evaluated for a knee replacement. My R. Knee is a mess and no other option if I want to keep kiting. I have one question for those of you with knee replacements: Do you know what type you have? Fixed Bearing or Rotating Platform? Been doing some research and it seems the Rotating platform implant is much more conducive to kiting. I want to be armed with a little more info so I can ask some intelligent questions and make good decisions.
