i totally agree with him kiteboarding is dangerous. I mean it's not as dangerous as other sports but it is way above things like golf or swimming. I think he is right on the money to put it up there with mountain bike riding. But per amount of risk there is no better sport in the entire world. That's where kiteboarding wins.

Activities like biking or driving are probably more dangerous than kiting - it's just that they don't feel dangerous when you are doing them. When you're learning to kite, the power of the kite can be very intimidating. As a beginner you may feel you are on the edge of being out of control, but once you are skilled at handling the kite it's not very dangerous - the risk factor is mostly based on sudden changes in wind conditions.

So, in no particular order
yes, it is dangerous; don't do it
quite being a pussy, man up and do it
you do know you are a beginner and have no way to know how dangerous it really is, right?
just enjoy whatever ride you choose, oh, and if you decide to continue welcome to the best sport ever!

The only time kiting becomes dangerous is when you can't control the kite, and if you are always in control then it is never dangerous.

Just understand that the only way to never lose control of the kite is to never launch it.

Anyways hangliding is more dangerous than kite surfing but I gave that up a long time ago for that reason too many people I flew with had crashes or very close calls.
What kind of HG did you fly ; and what was your rating or USHPA # ?
Be careful how you answer ; i'll know Exactly, how proficient you were.

but it is way above things like golf or
swimming.
In the USA alone there are 3500+ drownings a year...and of interest only about 20% of those would be considered kids (14 and younger). I am of course aware of the disparity in the number of people who kiteboard vs the number of people in the general population who go into oceans/lakes/rivers/swimming pools or even bathtubs to drown. But about 10 people a day in the USA die from drowning...so danger is everywhere.
The danger is if you don't respect a sport...or its potential to hurt you, then it will it probably will jump up and spank you.

They down not because they swim but because they can't. people who claim to "swim" most would down if they had to go more than 50 meters. I see waders (I would never call them swimmers even if that's what they think they are doing) in the ocean all the time as soon as their feet can't touch bottom they start to do that wierd arm slap and start drowning. what is wrong with people if you can swim don't go out there.

Whether or not you continue to kitesurf trust your instincts if you feel it's too dangerous you're probably right.
I think in kitesurfing and other extreme sports a lot of it comes down to personality and choosing the right conditions. If you're the type of person that likes to charge hard and always push the limits your likelihood of getting hurt will increase. Someone said "Kitesurfer with balls of steel also has knees of steel"
For example

As much as I'm alured by skydiving and wingsuits I feel like skydiving is too dangerous for me at least until I'm too old to do anything else and can accept the risk being crippled for life. I think everyone I know that mountain bikes has been injured some requiring surgery but again most of them push the limits regularly and the ground is unforgiving.
