As I always wear one, the helmet thing gets me too. Being pretty dialed in to my spots, I am typically the first one to put a kite in the air before it starts blowing enough. Other kiters new to my destination say "I was worried about you not having the skills to handle the current and light wind since you were wearing a helmet".
That helmet saved my life 3 times last year in chest to overhead. My board is a frickin brick and very narrow at the rails. One hit from that and you are gonna get some sleepy time in. My helmet has been my best purchase of kite gear.
