Again, LUEX.com compiled the most comprehensive list of airlines and their surf baggage policies found anywhere online – use it to plan your next surf trip and avoid heavy excess baggage fees.

Flying with surf boards can be a headache: airlines aren’t generally too keen to wrestle big, pointy, fragile things into the holds of their planes, and often charge a fortune for the hassle. Sneakily, they also often hide the extra fees and charges within the small print and technical jargon on their websites, which makes planning your dream trip a rather stressful affair. Even if you do find the information you’re looking for, the terms are often so ambiguous that it’s difficult to work out exactly what you’ll have to pay; everyone’s heard the stories about skint surf bums getting slammed with charges more expensive than the original ticket… In order to save your credit card a world of hurt, LUEX compiled a list of all the airlines that you need to access the best surf spots on the planet, along with their surf baggage policies.

To get the most out of the list, we recommend to first use an online flight comparison tool like Skyscanner to check which airlines fly to your destination of choice, then simply use the drop down menu or search bar to find the airlines you’re interested in.
Note: While all information is correct at the time of publication, airlines can change their regulations at any time. Use the information in the list as a guide, but double check before hitting ‘pay now.’ Research: Anca Gheorghiu.

Surprised British airways is free for surf board, interestingly they don't have a category for wakeboarding or kitesurfing but they do forbid windsurfing equipment:
British Airways:
You can't take the following items in either your hand or checked baggage:

Javelins and pole vaults
Hang gliders
Kayaks or canoes
Windsurfing boards and sails

I've never had Air Canada charge me extra for my kite gear and I've taken lots of gear on trips (ie. 2 surfboards and a twintip in one bag). I just get charged the usual baggage fees as long as I'm not oversize or overweight.

I actually found a loop hole water ski equipment is free on jet blue (after you pay for your checked bag) but no extra fees I just told them it's a wake board it takes a minute because there all dumb and need to look it up. But if you have extra time at the airport it's worth it. Also parachutes are allowed as checked or carry ons(as crazy as that sounds) so i tell them my kites a parachute. Or I've heard of just using a bag that looks like golf clubs

Buying a kite bag that says Golf is a good investment. Saved me already hundreds of USD.

Yeah, Toby, because you look so much like a golfer, especially when heading for Cumbuco, or some tiny Indonesian Island which could not even accommodate a miniature golf.
With the airlines I use in Asia, they know about the trick, and often check. But then, it doesn't matter because most charge "sports equipment" regardless.

I got dinged $200 by United today for a single shortboard, 6', maybe 20 pounds ... that's a new record for me for board fees.
