A kitesurf instructor died drowned, on the afternoon of Wednesday (21), in São Miguel do Gostoso, Potiguar coast. Gustavo Augusto, known as Pica-Pau, tried to save the son that was with him in a kitesurf and ended up falling in the sea.
Fishermen reported that the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. Gustavo Augusto was in a kitesurf with his son, who is 8 years old, in the back. At one point, the child fell into the water.

Upon realizing it, the father left the board and returned swimming to try to rescue the son. The kitesurfer, Leandro Ferreira, told the G1 that fishermen who were close to the site were able to visualize the situation and then went to meet the child and Gustavo.

When they got close, the father shoved his son toward the fishermen and then would have sunk in the water. "The child was rescued and Gustavo was not found, and his body was only found about an hour later, when I and another colleague met him at a distance of about 100 meters from the beach," says Leandro Ferreira.

He and another resident swam to the spot where Gustavo's body was and dragged him to the beach. "Unfortunately, when we arrived he was already dead. So we pulled the body into the sand." He says.

Gustavo was from Paraíba, but spent seasons in São Miguel do Gostoso acting as a kite surfing instructor. His son has been rescued and is well. On Wednesday night, the Technical-Scientific Institute of Expertise was activated to make the rescue of the body.

Sad. But why carry an 8 year old child out like that? Isn't that some sort of child endangerment?

Many take out childs...they love it.

But, 25-28 knots is strong wind...

And of course, offshore wind is a no go !!!

Toby - that is a misconception, that taking little kids out kiting with adult is safe!
Same thing we had discussed on a previous thread, which occurred in the Caribbean, Canadian kiter and the kid died.

RIP, but still very strange - how does a kitesurf instructor give the kid to the fishermen, and then goes under and not come up? I assume as a kiteinstructor you know how to swim quite well? Are there crazy undertow currents in the area?

No, he jumped and the kid fell down.
Since he was too powered he couldn't body drag back to the kid.
He released and tried to swim back...meanwhile some fishermen caught the kid.
And he drowned.

Sad story. RIP
