There must be something wrong with people.
If
Australian television footage showed the reported 8-10 foot Great White swimming around 600 meters from where Fanning and Medina were surfing. Both were pulled from the water;
equates to this
Australian surfer Mick Fanning narrowly avoided a shark attack
I'm not sure what people think the ocean is? If a shark swimming 600 meters away equates to narrowly escaping shark attack, they we've all been almost attacked by sharks.

600m. Literally over half a km away.
I narrowly avoided getting run over by a speeding car.........while I slept in my bed!

You guys are missing the point . While you can argue the toss about what distance constitutes "close" or not , the real story is about Mick Fanning who did indeed have a close encounter with a great white at this very event last year. Same surfer, big shark, same event. Major news at the time. And here he is, back in the water again and they spot another big shark in he vicinity....better safe than sorry. Anyone who saw the footage last year thought they were going to see a top surfer eaten live on TV

if u want a good watch - check out the jbay wsl rerun - it was absolute all time - the drone has epic footage of the gw cruising around.
It is definitely easier for the WSL crew especially with the super clear water - drone view, spotters on skis - but for the average surfer it is not something you want cruising around at your local.
All press titles are click bait based these days. Engagement /views leads to ad revenue. That is 2017. That is why the traditional press are losing the battle , they have gone full click bait and are now no different to anyone else.

"Jaws" did the shark population of the planet no good...
leave the good creatures alone! For the most part they are harmless. Of course, use common sense and precautions as you would with any wildlife, but don't spread panic & hysteria, please.

There is a balance needed, if you lived and surfed in Ballina (northern NSW) or La Reunion you may well think differently.
The true test is when you come to Australia and have a choice of surfing with nets (which kill cruising sharks) or without.
I don't know anyone that would surf Ballina (no nets) over Snapper (nets) based on principals.
Sadly the fishing industry is the real culprit.

What about human overpopulation?
