5/3 steamer recommendations

Postby Beardytello » Mon Jul 24, 2017 5:29 pm

The time has come to replace my wetsuit.

Any recommendations for a 5/3 front zip full steamer?

I was thinking Mystic potentially, using the thought process that they are a more Kiteboarding brand...so maybe more suitable?

Don't want another Billabong really.

I have an old Gul which has lasted really well! Not sure what they're like now?

Any recommendations appreciated!

Mine was custom fit. There's definitely a difference between ordinary surfing and kiting. I think surfers suits allow more shoulder rotation for padling so you get this back for warmth. The groin area is similar as both sports have similar stance, again they may give you more material as there's there's not quite as much stretch (not really sure here,). The ones I usually see mentioned are OR, mystic, NP, Patagonia , there's quite a few available in the UK right now. I think all big manufacturers have kite specific suits. Best bet is to try them on as they are like jeans and one manufacturer will be a slightly different cut. Any voids will cool you (and possibly flush the entire suit) so a snug fit is much more important than marketing hype and gimmicks.if you can't try then make sure they have a good returns policy and try it on at home and if it isn't quite snug or is overly tight and will tear quickly best send it back and try another.

I have had a Mystic Legend 5/3 for the last 2 years. It has been one of the best wetsuits I have had. I am in to my second winter now, and it is showing it's age with seams starting to go, and the zip not as free as it was. I will get through our winter (Southern hemisphere) before I replace it. I am sure there are many options but once I find a brand that I am happy with, I don't see any point in changing.

Not sure how models differ, but my Mystic Crossfire turned out to be one season suit. Neoprene in shoulders and sides fell apart completely. From 4 different brands, NP Edge lasted the longest so far, so I bought NP Combat for next winter (back zip). Your milage may vary

Honestly I don't think I'll ever buy a wetsuit from a kite brand again. My Ion has been meh at best on wear, never heard great things about mystic...but my ripcurl is looking to get replaced after 3 years of average use durring the whole year, not just winters.

In my experience the NP wetsuits are very very good and comfortable.

You could find here a couple of my preferred:

You can also check the Prolimit that are very good:

Stay salty!! ;)

Pretty much all the modern wetsuits are good. I generally find the fit to be most important as each manufacturer seems to aim at a different body shape.

NP wetsuits are the ones that fit me best and seem to be for the more bulky/muscular shaped frame. I have a cheap GUL for a summer suit but its more for slimmer folk (my size L fits fine on the shoulders but is a bit large on the waist and about 2 inches too long on legs and arms). Only giving these examples to show the disparity of sizing between brands. Try a couple to find which fit your body shape and then look through their range. The size charts online are normally pretty good once you understand which brands are designed for you.

Thanks guys!

NP are pretty expensive in comparison...but maybe that's a good thing!

I have an NP winter suit which I found so uncomfortable that it's sat in the garage ...

I now have an O'Neill Psychofreak 5/4 BZ (Back Zip) which I just love - don't even feel it's on. I'm out whenever there's wind but then I do look after my suits and also have an O'Neill Epic 4/3 for Spring and Autumn and an O'Neill Epic 3/2 for summer and abroad. As you might have gathered O'Neill suits fit me just fine.

Another recommendation for the O'Neil Psychofreak. Very stretchy (I'm normally a medium but was advised to get a small, which fits perfectly) but you do have to be careful with it. I almost put a finger through the leg when I first bought it and was pulling it up. I have the front zip which is a very good system.
