From my experience:
Never had problems with 5 line Rebel after releasing or when line broke. Had a couple of deathlooping incidents or too much power after quick release with bridled kites (+ some miscalculated problems when launching - such as bridle caught side tip).
That is the main i chose Rebels over the years. Another factor was the stability i felt only with loaded 5th line.

I guess, will have to demo 2018 model before buying this time...

I tried a 2018 10m Rebel yesterday and are very lazy and like the 4 line in my evos better than a Rebel that I also have.
I thought the new Rebel had the wind range and stability in gusts that I like so much. The way it turns is also very easy to control the speed. I am thinking that I could just have 1 11m Rebel for almost all conditions.

I weigh 87kg and have a large Tweentip a foil board and a skim.

i have a a 2012 fuse and think the kite is great, but don't like the length of the bridle as they are too long and easily tangle, i was considering a rebel, does the 2018 have bridles??

i just watched the video after posting, so this is basically a re-packaged re-tweeked fuse, which was a 4 line rebel?

Whats a depower stroke???i switched from bandit to rebel in 2015. It seems like the rebel is slower and has less power coming out of turns ( i already moved the strings to the more aggressive setting)..but it really is a safe kite..

So... What do you think Teabaggedeppo?

Personally, I do think that a Rebel in four lines is one kite among many others.
There were other kites that outperformed previous Rebel, again, Core XR4, for example.

I do think that the 5th was the soul of the Rebel, an unique and direct connection between the heart of the kite and the hook in my harness. The other "Y" front lines were just secondary appendices of that perfect connection.

Without 5th, the Rebel is lost.

..............................................................................................

I think you make good points and accentuate my own private concerns.

But until I have ridden it, then its just a private concern, You cannot unequivocally say ..."without the 5th, the rebel is lost".

You may be right, but lets see.

Maybe it is lost, but just maybe it has been replaced by something even better.

So... That is what I think.

You seem to write a lot of material, with a concrete mental position and yet haven't ridden it.

Personally I'd recommend to stop writing meaningless essays, ride it, then make your conclusion.

Finally rode and compared for two full days on the new 2018 and my 2016 Rebels 12 and 9 at OBX. (as well as a 2018 Neo). Being used to the 2016 Rebel, I was quite disappointed at first and thought the 5 line Rebel's "I'm going to grab you by the back of your shirt and throw you up in the sky" feeling was gone. Even posted on the Woo session about it.

BUT.

It takes more than one day to get familiar with new timings on the 4 lines. After the second day, I was jumping higher (yes, higher), landing softer, going significantly higher upwind and was able to fly the 12 in high 20s without a problem. Liked it so much, in fact, that I'm fully switching over to 2018. Everything is better, smoother, but still raw if you put it on the blue setting. Only one downside - the 2016 typography on the Rebel was way better.

I thought the 2016 was the best year for the 5 line Rebel, 2017 was not as good. 2018 4 line rocks. Haters - try it out for 2-3 FULL days on the click bar and then post. An hour session on the kites will not do either kite justice.
