Rider feedback please - Rebel 2018 on 4 and 5 vs 2017

Postby apollo4000 » Fri Aug 25, 2017 11:05 am

Hi,

No time or opportunity to demo the North Rebel.

My question is to riders with experience of riding the North Rebel 2017 vs the 2018 on 4 and 5 lines.

What insight can you share on these 3 set-ups in terms of riding characteristics?

2017 5 lines vs 2018 on 5 lines
2017 5 lines vs 2018 with the new 4 line set-up

Many thanks

I might have been too early with my question so I'll bump once.

It should make no difference flying the 2018 in either 5 or 4 lines as the 5th line is unloaded (as far as I understand).

Finally rode and compared for two full days on the new 2018 and my 2016 Rebels 12 and 9 at OBX. (as well as a 2018 Neo). Being used to the 2016 Rebel, I was quite disappointed at first and thought the 5 line Rebel's "I'm going to grab you by the back of your shirt and throw you up in the sky" feeling was gone. Even posted on the Woo session about it.

BUT.

It takes more than one day to get familiar with new timings on the 4 lines. After the second day, I was jumping higher (yes, higher), landing softer, going significantly higher upwind and was able to fly the 12 in high 20s without a problem. Liked it so much, in fact, that I'm fully switching over to 2018. Everything is better, smoother, but still raw if you put it on the blue setting. Only one downside - the 2016 typography on the Rebel was way better.

I thought the 2016 was the best year for the 5 line Rebel, 2017 was not as good. 2018 4 line rocks. Haters - try it out for 2-3 FULL days on the click bar and then post. An hour session on the kites will not do either kite justice.

Thanks pikovsg for the review! Can you comment on the depower stroke - does 2018 still depower like a Rebel? Or just like a good 4 line kite?

Depowers like a Rebel. Also has visibly more range on both ends, which is surprising since it already had above average range.

The big difference with 2018 difference is not the pull or lift, it's the landing - softer, if you want it soft. The 2016 9m leading edge would shift ever so slightly just before landing a 30+ foot jump. Didn't notice it before, but became evident vs. the 2018 which stays more solid throughout airtime.

My buddy who is a regular on the Woo leaderboards just switched over to 2018 from 2017 Rebels and loves them. He actually posted his new personal best the other day of 48 feet. He also said the kite is noticeable faster and still has that Rebel feel..

Because of that same buddy, I made it a point to test them more and then switched too. ;)

Hey rookie..it's too bad you were not kiting in 2011....that was the best performing Rebel year and the best looking also...i'm still riding the heck out of my 5 kites quiver
Have fun with your new toys

Nah, 2011 was a good year but really raw in power delivery.

Righto some interesting feedback on the rebel changes. Looking forward to trying them back to back.
