Best Kite for Downwinders - Recomendations

Postby Tio » Thu Sep 14, 2017 8:23 pm

Hi!

I'm thinking on changing my current Cabs SB 10mts and 8mts.

Any recommendations on the best kite for downwinders and fast turning kiteloops?

Would like a kite that doesn't backstall and fast turning hability.

Thanks!

Tio.

Will your downwinder include riding waves?
Are the conditions onshore, cross shore, cross on, cross off?

Sure you can also use any kite for upwinders, jumping, freestyle etc. But some might be better for one thing than others. Or not. I kited with a guy that did a downwinder from the north of Mozambique to the border with Somalia (more than 1000 km). He wasn't sponsored by a kite manufacturer and he was using wave kites. Makes sense to me. Good relaunch and good to enjoy the waves if you want to.

I guess that totally depends on what your doing.

Down in Hatteras there are two very different options, so two very different kites. Now with foiling, there is at least a third.

Sound side hitting all the slicks is super fun and screams for an all out C kite. You lose so much ground when unhooking so a downwinder is by far the most fun way to play around off the hook. Pretty much all C kites are boosting and looping machines.

Ocean side its clearly wave kites with drift, depower and turning speed as desired qualities.

Downwinder = rig a bit big

I do 200 km downwinders in my summers each time i go . I use freestyle kites (trigger) that they fly fast to the wind window (zenith) and i would like them to sit more back, because that i prefer to be well powered for downwinders. I should have a better feeling with a pure wave kite ? is that correct?
