I want connect a 1" stainless ring to 5/32 Amsteel Blue with a splice directly to the ring ( rather than making a loop and larks heading it). Here's the part I'm not sure about: how do I do this with only one free end of rope available?
Thanks

How much load must it take? Assuming it's to take a high load ...
How long is the free end of rope? If at least as long as 5/32" x 72 = 11" then use a regular splice. If not then splice and stitch with 0.8mm whipping twine which is rated at about 18kg.
A Brummel splice can be done with one end fixed but not with a ring in the loop as you want.

Thanks for the feedback. The splice is to be used on a Cab mushroom release pin QR mod and unfortunately I don't have room for a long bury.
How much strength is lost on Brummel with a short 20x bury? Isn't most of it's strength from the locking aspect of the splice?

A long bury (wih or without Brumel), if well done can hold up to 90 % of the line rating. A brumel will hold quite the same when new but loose rating with time and cycles, degradation speed depending on burry length. It can loose more than half of the rating in the end, say 30-50 % with say 4 cm blury (just give an idea as I am not sure of this last figure) ;
What will you connect to the Mushroom ? Directly the power rope or an intermediate loop ? I did both but you can find solutions for the second one. I added a seam for the first one to limit degradation rate.

I also use a Brummel splice with a Cab mushroom QR with a very short bury which to be on the safe side I then double hand stitch with 0.8mm 18kg breaking load Marlow Ropes No.4 whipping twine.
I use Marlow Ropes 5mm D12 Dyneema which has a breaking load of about 2,300 kg so even if this ends up with as little as 30% of breaking load I figure that at 700kg+ I've got far worse problems to think about! Other D12 average breaking loads are about 2,000kg for 4mm, 1500kg for 3.5mm, and 900kg for 3mm.
3.5mm is nice rope and is easier to work with and even at 30% of average breaking it's plenty strong enough at 450kg+ because that's about the same as typical front line breaking load.

The lines on my sparebar were quite tired from the loops and about 0.5 meters down. My friend cut the lines about 1 meter and splice new 1 meter dyneema pieces and made new loops. He has made loading tests of his splices, they holds about 90-100% of dyneema line capacity.
I think it's an impressive craftsmanship and the length of the lines got exactly right
