Do you have to be ON the wave for it to be considered a record..or can you claim it by say riding out way in front....

Extrapolating can I claim a bigger one if I watch the video somewhere while sitting on my couch ...
what if I just kite surf the same ocean while these waves are going off?

Or say punt off the back of one and then show a big wave in the background.....
Where is the line drawn.....

Takes courage none the less but there was some better more legit stuff going down those days that's for sure.
I think J Richmond was out there and going pretty deep.

Amazing!!! that's about 53' bigger than any wave i have surfed. I would think with a wave that large the kite would end up in a wind shadow, or get ripped out of your hands as the wave starts to break behind you.

Sorry, I agree. Certainly took guts to get out there, but you'd have to drop in or at least be on the critical part of the wave to consider it being 'ridden'.
Use the kite for entry then throw it away. I bet the Hyundai boys liked it.

To be fair, the video clip doesn't show the whole ride in any case, so it's not necessarily true that he didn't drop in or ride the critical part of the wave. What I've noticed from watching many clips of Nazare is that the wave is pretty much unridable - at least not in the way that, say, Peahi is. It doesn't really barrel: it's a huge, fast moving mountain of water. If the rider stays for any amount of time in the "critical part" the wave inevitably crumbles on top of the rider & he (or she) gets pounded ... as in Andrew Cotton's recent backbreaking effort.

To be fair if he had dropped in or even ridden part of a wave wouldn't it be on the clip instead of showing him ridding between them ? Agreed Nazare is a special wave to ride (go straight and run for it :)) but if surfers did it so could a kitesurfer !

I think Robbie Naish still holds the official record at 20m, so this is a possible contender.

I only see waves this size up close in my dreams, ahem nightmares... These monsters have been haunting me at night since childhood. I have infinite respect for everyone who braves them. Hats down, you are better men!!!
