I suppose create his own company, the same way his mentor Robby Naish and Jason Polakow. Most likely to aim at the foilboarding/SUP market, where he has the strongest reputation.

I don't know, but I'm bummed to see this.
I doubt that he'll make his own company for making boards.

My guess is, now that Naish has a surf and kite foil range, they tried to force him into using their gear exclusively. He's been using custom/unmarked foils a lot more recently. That and the fact that his other sponsors (GoPro and Red Bull) probably provide enough $$$$$$ without the restrictions.
From an article in Surfer mag just couple of days before leaving "Nash":
"On the foil side of things, Nash makes the foils that I use every single day and I also get custom foils for testing purposes. I kind of do a lot of my own R&D, but the production stuff that I use is from Nash. It's kind of funny because we're at a point in this sport where it's been around for a long time, but at the same time it feels so new. There's a lot of development happening and I think it's really cool."

Nah I doubt it has anything to do with the gear. Sponsorships are usually a matter of money (which is reasonable). I bet Kai has been pretty instrumental in giving feedback to hone the Foils to make it absolutely epic. He is after all the leading athlete when it comes to foil surfing. If he needed different gear Naish would have just made it for him.
