board size for kids

Postby windfreak74 » Fri Jan 12, 2018 9:22 pm

i recently started my daughter into the sport. we are almost ready to hit the water.
i have hit the pause button for a little while since i proposed to build a small board for her little size.
that way she gets rid of the over excitement and we can bond doing something for her.
my concern for building a board is to create something with ergonomics.
can someone shine me ideas of the retationship of width and length related to height and weight?
my assumption is that most boards are chest to shoulder height and width is about center to center shoulder length.
would this be a good proportion to build something specific for he frame?
am i overthinking?
3mm to 4mm balsa wood, 1 layer of 6 oz fiberglass both sides, unidireccional carbon tape at the bottom on the midlle of the board or x pattern , 2 fins , dimensions 100cms x 27cms, oval board shape. she weighs 25 kilos and shes 120 cms height. athletic built.
thanks in advance for all comments!

I posted a calculator a while ago, which you can use to see the weight a particular board size will support:

At 10kn (5m/s), for 25kg, your proposed board size of 100cm x 27cm is pretty much ballpark.
You may want to make it slightly bigger for lower speeds.

Here' the board I built for my son.

thanks for sharing the info and taking the time to do the math!
Do you reccomend going wider for more drag or longer for efficiency?

:D Glad you like it

I think that wider is generally more efficient (higher aspect).
However, the rider needs to edge the board. Which means at least the heels must be close to the board edge, but not so close as to drag in the water.
So you can build a wider board and offset the pads to the heel side. Or build a narrower board and place the pads in the centre.

Or you can have a wider board and ride with bindings which gives you extra leverage (my personal preference)

Whichever way you decide to go, we want to see pictures of the finished product!
