Looking to purchase a hydrofoil for kiteboarding and maybe some simple wave riding . Is there a floaty board that can function as both ?

Loads of experience all over the world on Liquid Force - some hate these, others love them (good value as low cost)

The LF foil boards are wakesurf boards, not surfboards.... so they will work for waveriding but probably not the best since they don't have much (if any) rocker. They're designed to ride knee high wake behind a boat.
There are a options I've looked at that look somewhat decent, my favorites are the one from slingshot:
http://www.slingshotsports.com/Converter-54
and the one from zeeko
http://zeeko-kites.com/gb/home/327-air- ... -2017.html
the downside to these convertible boards though is that they're heavy as f***, think the slingshot one is over 8 pounds, and they'll have a lot of swing weight on the foil due to how much longer they are than a "proper" foil board
personally i'd just get one of each, you can pick up used surfboards pretty cheap like $100-200 that will be more than fine for kiting and it wont be a tank

I know that Alpine has a hybrid board
http://www.alpinefoil.com/kitefoil-wind ... tible.html and their foils are excellent.
F-one has the Mitu convertible board
http://www.f-onekites.com/Products/Surf ... onvertible, one of the local kitesurfers loves the regular Mitu board for wave riding.

Just a basic question before I buy a hydrofoil. Can you free foilsurf with a standard kiteboarding hydrofoilboard or do you need a longer board ?

I agree with this in principle. LF boards (Rocket Foil, FoilFish) are way over built. I started using them in surf after breaking all of my "real" surfboards. I cannot even break off a fin on a LF KiteFish. I used the nose of one to "chock" my vehicle from rolling when I had to change a tire on an incline. I did have to fix a small crack on that one. And they do feel a bit dead compared to some of the more skittish quad surfboards.
If you intend to ride strapless and "simulate" surfing, you may not like these low rocker boards in larger waves. If you use straps, you can pull up on the front foot to gain "apparent" rocker on a steep face. I use mine strapped in all conditions from 1ft lake shore break to double overhead. Once the wave has a respectable verticle face, you will need straps to make this board work.
Please note that I am an "8ther" as I come in at 225lbs or 1/8 of a ton. Extra weight helps on this board. I also no longer have any want for "volume" in a kiteboard. Low volume boards are better for kiting than high volume boards.
For a foil platform???? A piece of plywood, or half of a wooden pallet works fine.
