According to Google Trends, kiteboarding is declining in popularity

Postby DeGi » Sat Jan 20, 2018 3:57 pm

https://trends.google.com/trends/explor ... itesurfing

Any idea why that might be? It looks like both "kiteboarding" and "kitesurfing" are declining in the past 10 years in Google searches. Honestly, I was surprised to see that, especially since I'm new to the sport and thought it's on the uprise.

It’s strange indeed.

Because every year there are more and more schools which are always busy.

Maybe people know now what our sport is so they don't have to google it when they stuble upon "kitesurfing" when browsing the vast net.

That's a wrong interpretation of the trend. You can't take it overall, only comperatively..
It's not that kite boarding is shrinking,
it's that google searches in general grow with a bigger rate that the searches for kiteboarding...

I suggest you compare it with a similar sport... e.g. paragliding

Rubbish, we as a school are busier than ever, also as an online shop again way busier than ever.
Our local beach is seeing way more new people kiting, gone are the days where we know everyone, plus we run trips abroad and we simply see more and more kitesurfers at each of the locations every year!

Kykeon, I don't think that's a wrong interpretation. Tooltip for 'Interest over time' explains:
Numbers represent search interest relative to the highest point on the chart for the given region and time. A value of 100 is the peak popularity for the term. A value of 50 means that the term is half as popular. Likewise a score of 0 means the term was less than 1% as popular as the peak.
So the way I understand this, is not relative to the overall Google searches, but relative to the peak for this particular term.

Comparing it to paragliding (https://trends.google.com/trends/explor ... aragliding) shows paragliding being constant over the last ~5 years, but kiteboarding declining.

Happy for your business growing....i hope u will close soon and maybe less people on the beach...or sport will die in few years due to the crowded beachs...your passion for business will destroy my passion for kitesurf...
